Pinterest is no longer designed for images only. Today, the site has an active community of diverse readers. Use the above tips to grab the developing opportunities on Pinterest and expand your global boundary through this site. Tips For Pinterest Marketing In Just Minutes Per Day As you can tell by now, pinterest marketing may take too much time if you don’t implement the right strategies. A comprehensive Pinterest marketing campaign can deliver amazing results with very little effort. Here are 6 tips to help you market on Pinterest in just minutes a day. 1. Repin Each Day For A Few Minutes You should take at least three minutes each day to repin and curate to your Pinterest boards. Type in keywords for your niche in Pinterest search and based on your initial search, you will see additional search terms. Click on one of the words under the search bar and you’ll be able to add them. This makes it easier for you to find the best content that you can share. 2. Schedule Pins This is one of the best strategies to keep your account active during weekends. It is recommended that you do this for at least 5 minutes on Fridays after posting your daily pins. When Scheduling pins you can choose a number of tools including Tailwin, Buffer or Viralwoot to post images. Tailwind is a better option as it allows you to schedule pins through your browser extension. 3. Follow Pinners In Your Industry Or Niche To ensure a successful Pinterest marketing campaign, you need to follow relevant pinners in your industry or niche. Ensure that you follow 3 to 5 pinners every day. But you should avoid following just anyone. Ensure that you review the profile of a pinner before following him/her. Spare sometime in the course of the day (at least 5 minutes) to search for new pninners. 4. Comment On A Pin Every Day Always check out for relevant pins you can comment each day. You can like many pins but if a pin inspires you then you can contribute something to the conversation. You should make at least one comment each day. Make the comments as short or as long as you want. But you should ensure that your comment is not self promotional. 5. Create Your Own Images Create your own images and pin them to your Pinterest boards. These could be images that can be used with stand-alone graphics or blog posts. It is recommended that you do this all in one sitting. This saves time in production and concept. 6. Generate Content Ideas Using Analytics Ensure that you review Pinterest analytics at least once a week. Evaluate your click progress, impression and repin. This will help you know which images and boards are attracting more attention. If you look at Facebook, this is incredibly easy to understand right away. Facebook marketing involves posting things to your Facebook wall, which in turn will be seen by all your followers. And if some of those followers should like your content or share it, then it will also be seen by their connections on Facebook and thus your following will grow. Methods For Driving Traffic From Pinterest Did you know that Pinterest can be used to drive traffic to your website? Recent research indicates that it is growing rapidly as a tool to boost your social media presence and drive traffic. According to Shareaholic's Q3 2014 Traffic Report, Pinterest drives more than three times the traffic of Google Plus, YouTube, LinkedIn, StumbleUpon, Reddit and Twitter combined. But in order to get that traffic, you have to use the right methods. Just pinning your content will not help. The most important things on Pinterest are the images themselves. So make an extra effort to create compelling and irresistible images. Once that is taken care of, you can focus on how to drive traffic using Pinterest. Here are three actionable methods that can help you. 1. Add a Pin It Button to Your Website The first thing you need to do is to add a Pin It button to your website that will appear on every piece of content having an image. You can do it just like you add any other social media buttons. Doing this will help visitors to share your content on Pinterest that they find interesting. And when they do so, their followers will also see it and further share it. This way, your content will gain popularity and credibility. 2. Make Your Board Easily Searchable Creating the board on Pinterest is not sufficient. You have to make it easily searchable. Name your board same as your website or blog name. Also add description, taglines and links that tell people what your blog and board are all about. It will also make it easier to find your board on Pinterest as well as search engines. But make sure you don't stuff your description with keywords just to rank higher. Keep in mind that, ranking in searches will be of no use if you turn off your potential visitors. 3. Improve Engagement You need to engage people to get traffic to your website. Regularly share images that are not only compelling but also invoking curiosity and interest in the viewers so that they click on it and go to your website. Also do research on your followers' interests and the kind of images they like and share. Recently Pinterest has introduced the feature of Rich Pin. You can use it to add descriptions and specific information to your images to tell people more about the content they link to. You see, if used the smart way, Pinterest can be a great source of referral traffic. If you implement the methods described above, you can attract a lot of visitors to your website. But make sure you post images that are highly specific and relevant to your niche. This will help them to rank in searches and they will engage more viewers. Seven Pinterest Tools for Automation If you're promoting your business through Pinterest, then you need to look for timesaving tools that will automate your marketing strategy hassle-free. There are many tools and services which can streamline the way you find and pin your content on Pinterest. Let’s have a look at seven major Pinterest tools that can be helpful to you as an online marketer. 1. Trigger Pin Posting With the IFTTT If This Then That (IFTTT) service can allow you to freely automate tasks between different platforms such as apps, tools and social networks by creating recipes. You can easily trigger tasks based on when you like a pin on Pinterest, either from your profile or when you post any pin to your profile. Also, you can easily set up triggers from other channels that can lead to pinning of an image to a specified board on Pinterest. The IFTTT features more than 200 channels but you need to look for those that are image-centric and identify ones that can perfectly combine with smart automations for Pinterest. It’s one of the easiest automation tools you can use when designing an effective marketing strategy. 2. Schedule Pins with Buffer If you’ve been scheduling social media updates though Buffer, then you can use the same to schedule pins to your pinterest board. For it to work effectively, you need to connect your Pinterest account, then create a schedule that will dictate when you would like pins to be published on the specified Pinterest profile. 3. Pin on the Go with Pinterest App This is a Pinterest app designed for iOS and Android devices that allows users to add images to their Pinterest boards from anywhere and at any time. The app also makes possible sharing of photos taken from the smartphone to Pinterest board. 4. Inspirational Viral Tag Pins Apart from giving you the Buffer-style scheduling and design of queuing posts, ViralTag can allow you to add some inspiration for the things you share. The platform also connects to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, Pinterest and Tumblr. This tool allow you to create a one sharing schedule for all your connected accounts unlike the case with Buffer where you have to create a schedule for each connected account.

Sample Content Preview All of these factors will help you determine if a keyword or set of keywords is worth your time. Overall, you just want to research and see if you can improve upon other campaigns or cash in on keywords that are wide open and have yet to have videos ranked for them. Now that you've done your research, you should have some keywords for the video that you plan to upload. When you upload the video, try to tie in the best keywords with the title. You should also include them naturally in the description. Do this by writing a short blurb about your video and place the keywords in there naturally. Also make use of the “tags” feature that YouTube offers to you, this is where you want to enter the most relevant keywords to your video and message. It's super important that you don't start “keyword stuffing” during any of this though. Keyword stuffing is when you mindlessly place tons of keywords all over your video's description, title, and tags. In reality, this not only hurts your rankings but it looks bad as well. Stick to a small pool of very targeted keywords for each video that you upload. In some cases, you could create multiple generic videos with a call to action and maybe different art or styles, and then upload them with this method. That is where some marketers may consider this process to be a bit grey hat or even black hat. After your video is uploaded and you've optimized the keywords in the title, description, tags, and so on – you're ready to start the next step towards ranking. If you want to go the natural white-hat route, which is highly recommended, then what you want to do is share the video on all of your social networks. Proceed to embed the video on a relevant page or section of your website. Create natural engagements and encourage your audience to share your video as well. Patience is the most important factor with this part. Don't be afraid to network and reach out to other YouTuber's (politely) to ask if they can help you out with your video(s). In time, the more social signals and natural back links that you receive towards your video, the higher it's going to rank. If you're creating valuable content, then it shouldn't be a problem to get websites and other networks and people to share your content with their own audience or friends. If you want to go a somewhat blackhat route, then you can start purchasing backlinks or running SEO campaigns and pointing them to your video(s). Some of the best outlets for buying these sorts of backlinks in bulk would have to be Fiverr or even SEOClerks. You can even buy or attract different social signals and point them at your video. This is a major hit or miss and can be extremely risky, so use it with caution on your campaigns As a whole, this method will work very well if you put your own spin on it and have a lot of patience. If you target the right keywords, and keep creating valuable content then your audience will expand and you'll see loads of traffic on autopilot. 6 Overall Methods For More YouTube Views & Traffic Youtube has an excellent potential for creating awareness about a brand, goods or services that a person offers. The challenge, however, is that there are thousands of videos existing on the platform and users keep on uploading more videos by the minute. Each of these users hopes to get views. So how does one ensure his or her video is visible and attracting views or traffic? The following is just 6 tips for getting more views and traffic from YouTube. Conduct research for your video channel The secret to attracting plenty of views to your video is first understanding the viewers. Doing so requires research to determine the purpose of the video, the target audience, the content value the audience seeks, and where besides YouTube is the audience found. Armed with this information, you can brand your videos in a way that it appeals to the targeted masses. A relatively easy method of researching is by analyzing Youtube videos with the most views or shares. Create quality and timeless videos When it comes to the web content is king. People see the videos because they hope to get value in the form of knowledge, entertainment or nourishment. For this reason, the content should be valuable, of good audio and video quality, nondiscriminatory, and one that cuts across religion, race and gender. It's amazing how many YouTubers upload videos that fail to meet such standards and wonder why their videos are not attracting views. Remember the easiest way to get more views is when the video goes viral, and every one is sharing or tagging their friends. No one wants to share poor quality and boring videos. Write engaging and detailed video descriptions When you upload a video on Youtube, neither Google nor Youtube can watch or even listen to it. Instead, they rely on the text a person used to describe the video to understand and even rank the video. Since Google uses the words in the video description to list it, it is only prudent for a person to provide a detailed description. After all, if you took your time to make the video and upload it, spending a few minutes writing it's story won’t hurt. Besides, with a better ranking, you get more views. Optimize Your Video Keywords Although it pays to have a good YouTube ranking, it is more rewarding if the classification extends to Google and search engine searches. It's obvious that many websites’ traffic comes from search engines like Google, which create page rankings depend mainly on the keywords used. Therefore, if you want more traffic to your video, consider using appropriate video keywords that will give your video an edge in the search engine results page. An easy way of identifying the video keywords is to discover the keywords used by other YouTube videos appearing on the first pages of the search engine, and then use those words in your video description. Capitalize On Social Media Platforms Social Media platforms are useful tools for getting the message out to the masses. Platforms like Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Quora, Whatapps, Instagram, Pinterest and many others are worth utilizing. Post links to your video on those platforms and even proactively ask the online community to view, like, comment and even share with their friends and relatives. However be careful not to spam the social media accounts of other users. Another idea is joining communities and forums dealing with issues your video addresses. To answer a member's question just offer insight and post the link to your Youtube video that provides detailed information. Determine If There Is a Video Ranking High On Google SERPs As mentioned previously: a good indicator as to whether you can easily rank on page one of the Google search results, is if there's already a video up there or not. Furthermore, if there's a video ranking; how well optimized is it? Can you better optimize your video and boost it's social signals? If so, you can easily outrank it. Closing Words In closing, you may have came into this not sure how you should approach YouTube or how you can implement it into your business. At this point, you should not only have a game plan in mind, but you should also have some ideas as to how you plan to market and drive traffic to your videos on this awesome platform. There's really not a TON to know about YouTube, aside from the basics of settings up your channel, connecting your networks, and creating content regularly. While this provides a basic overview of YouTube, there are tons of tips, tricks and strategies you can use to get more out of it. You should also always make it a point to monitor your results and check out the increasingly thorough analytics that YouTube provides for you in your dashboard. This can help you determine where your traffic is coming from and how you might be able to scale up or even modify your current campaign(s) to benefit even futher. Sample Content Preview The Best Type of Content To Post On Reddit Reddit's an amazing website, thanks in part to its great variety of sections for people to search through and more than enough ways for people to interact with each other. However, this doesn't mean that every single bit of content should be posted there. There are a number of specific types of content that you can contribute to Reddit that will help you better leverage the power of the community. Listed below are just a few kinds of content that Reddit users seem to react best to: Questions Can Be Great You should consider asking creative questions on Reddit. You can ask questions relating to what people would do in certain situations or what ideas can be found around the world. If you ask questions on occasion then people will interact with you and give you their own special ideas in response to your topic. If you are smart you can find a way to link to your own site. Make People Laugh Comical content can be perfect for you to post on Reddit. It's often easier for people to share content on Reddit if it's funny. This is because people always enjoy a laugh every once in a while. Also, people want a respite from all the hostile and negative content that's all around the online world. They'll want to feel happy and excited about whatever it's they are finding online. Add New Ideas You should think about new ideas that you want to share with other people. Whether it's to offer a new recipe to people or to showcase some new innovations or creations that have been developed over time, you should share new ideas with others. People want to learn new things and are willing to go online to find them. Solve people’s problems Some of the highest rated self posts on Reddit are ones that solve a problem that individuals or a community has. When someone is able to offer genuinely useful content, people feel obliged to upvote it. Therefore, when you are posting make sure that what you a writing is just rubbish and that it will be helpful to someone. Check Out the Videos Media is more easy for an audience to consume than text, so if you’re posting a video of yourself or a link to Youtube then you can expect it to do better than text. Online viewers are lazy, appeal to this laziness with images, video and How To Get More Upvotes On Reddit Let's be honest, there's really no other place on the web that is more coveted for online entrepreneurs than the first page on reddit. If you operate or run an online venture, you have probably realized that it's a huge task to get up-votes on reddit especially if your site is new. Do you have low rankings on the search engines and no clue on how to get visitors to your website? I feel your plight and pain. I've been there before, but I learned how to utilize reddit in the right way to drive quality traffic to my website. Reddit's the online home away from home for millions of people every month. It helps start memes, create overnight celebrities, change the world and shape the news in a wide array of ways. So it's no surprise to any online entrepreneur that submitting a post on Reddit, something which almost everyone can do is one of the gold mines for traffic generation in the online world. Likewise it can also prove to be a hard nut to crack. And there is no guide that guarantees success. 1) Have a stunning title. Make sure your title is correct and accurate. There is no room for typos otherwise you will be embarrassed in the comments. Typing errors tend to annoy most Redditors who will definitely down-vote your site out of existence. 2) Have a good thumbnail. Just like blog posts and YouTube videos, your thumbnail has everything to do with convincing visitors to click your content. The same applies to Reddit. Most people like great photos, if the thumbnail is an image of an empty field it's likely not to contribute towards your post getting click-throughs or more upvotes. But if you get an attention snatching photo like Kanye West playing soccer, and you make the photo him dribbling- you will be onto something. The thumbnail continues the information but does not give it all. This means many people will click onto the post to try and see the full thumbnail and if they like it. 3) Be relevant. Before you post anything, spend some time finding out what is trending on Reddit. Know what most people are talking about and what is getting up-voted. If people are talking about the Kardashians at the moment, then write a good article about the Kardashians and then submit it on Reddit. 4) Submit at the Right Time The best way to find out this, is to check your statistics. When is usually the best day for your blog or site? When do you always get the highest number of General Tips For Using Reddit As An Online Marketing Reddit was founded by university roommates Steve Huffman and Alexis Ohanian. The social networking, entertainment and news website calls itself 'The Front Page of the Internet' and comes with an interesting blend of links, news and commentary. If you know how to use Reddit effectively and you sign up and create an account, you can get multitudes of visitors to your blog and an increase in your online earnings. Reddit Rankings Are Determined by Upvotes and Downvotes To many marketers Reddit's an essential resource that has become indispensable. The difference between Reddit and Twitter for instance is that with Reddit, the stream of content is curated by the community. A post's position on the site is either of value and it's up-voted or it's deemed unworthy and down-voted. You need to submit interesting topics to get up-votes, otherwise your account can get banned. People Want Content of Value But how often should you try to drive traffic from Reddit? How often should you be submitting links? Other social bookmarking sites allow you to submit lots of links every day, but not Reddit - in fact they won't allow you to do so. In spite of Reddit's strict rules, you can drive huge traffic from Reddit to your blog by using it the right way and in the long run you benefit more than with other social networking sites. Timing is also a key factor to submitting links and according to experts the best time to submit a link is before 5pm EST because this is when most people are browsing Reddit. Making it to the Front Page Items that do make it onto the front page are seen by countless numbers of people sending large amounts of traffic to the linked website. The front page is made up of content which is submitted to the site's subreddits - music, gaming, news, pic etc and visitors to the site are subscribed to these top channels. As you discover niche communities, you can subscribe to subreddits, which will push popular posts from those channels to your homepage. If a subreddit gets enough subscribers, it becomes part of the default homepage, and this in turn drives more subscribers and traffic. If you don't want to see content from a certain subreddit on your homepage, you just have to unsubscribe from it. Three Tools To Help Your Reddit Marketing Efforts Are you tired of the usual social marketing strategies such as leveraging Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest? Well, you may consider using Reddit for your internet marketing campaigns. Reddit's one of the most popular websites in the world with over 56 billion views each year. It's one way of ensuring that you are ahead of the pack as most business have saturated other social media networks. If you are going to use Reddit for your marketing campaigns, it's important that you get it right the very first time. If you are already using Reddit for your marketing, it's time to take it to the next level.

Sample Content Preview Tip #2: Getting Google+ Friends And Connections Obviously, getting contacts is paramount. The more friends you have, the better, but they must also be targeted. It won’t do you a lot of good to have a million contacts if they aren’t interested in whatever you’re offering! Contact lists on Google+ are known as “Circles”. You can have as many circles as you like, and you can divide people into various circles. Your contacts will not see which circle you’ve added them to, so you don’t have to worry about offending anyone. You can easily keep your family and friends separate from your business contacts if you’d like to use the same account for both business and personal contacts. Make sure to check out various Google+ directories to find people who are interested in your niche. You will probably also want to add yourself to the directories, as well. Below you will find a few directories to try. https://plus.ftppro.com https://www.findpeopleonplus.com https://www.gphangouts.com Tip #3: Moderate your Promotion One of the biggest mistakes people make with social marketing is spamming their followers. While social marketing is essentially permission-based, you can still spam your followers if you post too often. Because of the potential viral marketing element, it is especially important to moderate your promotion on Google+, because you want those promotions you make to be impactful. More people will +1 your links if you post them rarely. I suggest posting no more than 2-3 links each day. This will give you the biggest potential to be seen, while still being respectful to your contacts and not flooding them with promotions. Don’t forget to mix your promotions with useful links from time to time. This will get people to pay attention to everything you post, because they won’t want to miss anything important. Make sure you get them used to seeing useful, important links from you! Tip #4: Streams A stream is a newsfeed that includes your own posts and updates, as well as those of the contacts in your circles. You can think of it like Google+’s own RSS feed. You can view your stream simply by logging into your account and visiting the main page. Don’t neglect to do this, because you can make great use of it. Watch your stream carefully. Whenever someone posts something related to your niche, especially if it’s a question, be sure to add to their discussion. This will help boost your reputation within your niche, because people will see that you are knowledgeable, and they’ll also see how helpful and friendly you are. Remember, the stream isn’t just there for your own updates. Pay attention to the updates of your circle and you’ll get a lot of great promotional and branding opportunities out of it. Tip #5: Hangouts Hangouts are live, multi-person video conferences between Google+ users. These are great, because they can be used for webinars, and you can get a lot of people together at once. Hangouts are great for making presentations to your audience. Be sure to put together an outline or script before you begin to eliminate a lot of the “ums” and “uhs” you might get otherwise, and schedule the webinar a day or two in advance to give people plenty of time to clear their schedules. One major reason you should use Hangouts is because you can get live feedback from the other people who attend the video chat. This allows you to figure out what people want to know without having to ask them upfront. Additionally, it allows you to make a physical presentation by showing real world examples of what you’re talking about. This could be especially helpful for live howto demonstrations. Hangouts offer a level of human contact a standard chat never could, and they can be an excellent marketing tool if used properly. Tip #6: Sparks Sparks is a search engine that is based on recommendations. You can use it to share interesting content, including your own, and to seek the content shared by others within your circles. You can subscribe to live feeds and receive instant updates on content shared around those topics. That also means people will be able to receive the recommendations you make. You’ll be able to share pictures, videos, and links to websites, blog posts, and more with those people who are in your circles, as well as those who add you to their contact list. This makes it easy to get your information in front of people quickly, to keep them updated in one central location, and to find breaking news and information in your niche that you can share with others. Tip #7: Huddle Huddle is a text message service that will let you send text messages instantly to the people you’re in contact with. You can send messages to single people or to entire groups of people! If you’ve ever wanted to get into mobile marketing but didn’t know how, this is the perfect chance for you to give it a try! You can also sync your Google+ account with almost any mobile device, allowing you to instantly upload photos, tag locations with your phone’s GPS, add locations to your updates, and much more. And don’t worry about privacy. You can set permissions on things like photos and locations so only people in specific circles can see them. That way, if you only want family to see your locations, your other contacts won’t be able to find out where you are. This is an extremely important tool, but remember to use it wisely. People will get upset very quickly if you abuse this feature, especially if they get charged for the text messages they receive. So use it, but use it only for very important updates. Tip #8: Your Profile When you create your Google+ account, don’t forget to fill your profile out completely. One of the biggest mistakes people make in social marketing is to treat it like a marketing tool and nothing more. Don’t do this! You see, the thing that makes social marketing effective isn’t the “marketing” aspect. It’s the “social” aspect. You have to treat it just like you would if you had nothing to market. Set up your profile completely. Add a photo, fill out your “About” page completely, including an introduction that includes keywords that will make it easy for people to find you. Don’t forget to add a link to your website or blog! The more thorough your profile, the more “real” you become in the eyes of your contacts. This level of personality is what makes social marketing so incredibly powerful, so don’t forget to make use of it! Tip #9: Avoiding a Ban While using social marketing is essentially permission-based marketing, it is still possible to get banned if you’re not careful. It’s important to take precautions to avoid such a fate, because losing your account means losing all the work you’ve put into building contacts and nurturing them. The first thing to remember is to be respectful. Don’t spam people with endless links. Don’t send them marketing through private messages. Don’t post links to questionable content. Most importantly, never use those services that use scripts to trick people into sharing your content. This will get you banned very quickly from any service you do it with, including Google+. Also, don’t just indiscriminately add thousands of people. The service is new, but it definitely has the potential to be abused. You will undoubtedly begin seeing people getting banned for adding too many people too quickly in the near future under the assumption that only spammers do this, so be careful! You can always get more contacts by adding your URL to your forum signatures, email signature, blog posts, your blog sidebar, and Google+ directories.

But before you can take a single step towards that goal, you first have to understand how you got to where you currently are. Everyone has habits in their life that they have developed over the years. Some of them are really good for you and others not so much. For example, you might have learned to brush your teeth every morning and every night before bed. This will keep your teeth healthy and it is a habit that will give you a better smile, save you big money at the dentist and prevent a whole lot of pain and suffering (anyone who has ever had a dental extraction will agree wholeheartedly). On the other hand, you might have developed the habit for procrastination. You definitely aren’t alone. Everyone procrastinates to some degree, and some people make it a way of life. Procrastination happens for many reasons. Sometimes it is the fear of success, the lack of confidence in achieving it and sometimes, it is just a lack of motivation. These are just two examples of good and bad habits. You have thousands of habits (good and bad) that you have ingrained in yourself over the years. Understanding how these habits developed will allow you to see your own successes and failures more clearly and being familiar with the psychology behind habits will give you an objective perspective and allow you to fix problems without as much emotional baggage. The Psychology Behind Your Habits It all starts with understanding the psychology behind your habits: how they form, what motivates you to perform them and how they become a permanent part of your life. The first thing that you need to understand is that all habits – from brushing your teeth to recognizing and taking advantage of multi-million dollar business opportunities – are formed exactly the same way. The neurological process in forming habits is identical, and it doesn’t matter if it is a tiny habit, a major habit, a bad habit or a good one. Understanding this is actually one of the most important things that you can do because it immediately tells you something about yourself – namely, that if you can teach yourself to brush your teeth twice or three times a day, without even thinking about it, then you can teach yourself anything. You can have confidence in your ability to teach yourself any good habit that you want because you have already done it many times in your life. While brushing your teeth may seem to have very little to do with starting an online business and making it successful, the process is exactly the same. If you can do one, you can do the other. Learning How to Brush Your Teeth Again Imagine that you are not in the habit of brushing your teeth. You brush a couple of times a week, but you want to brush at least twice every day. You probably aren’t trying to develop this habit in reality but bear with me because it serves to demonstrate a very important example of how habits are formed. Let’s start with the morning. When you get up in the morning, you know that you have bad breath. The last thing that you want to do is leave the house with dragon breath and then go to work and talk to co-workers. That’s why when you first wake up, you are going to spend a few minutes thinking about what it would be like to go into work with bad breath. Imagine the look on your co-worker's faces and how people would talk about you. This should properly motivate you to get into the bathroom as soon as you wake up to brush your teeth. If you want to motivate yourself in the evening, using the same example, then spend a few minutes lying in bed and thinking about all of the bacteria, SUCCESS HABITS 19 sugar and rotting bits of food that is still in and on your teeth. You will want to get up and brush them before you go to sleep. These pre-actions are called triggers, and they are the basis of the neurological process that creates habits. When you have a trigger, you motivate an action. You can create these triggers yourself so that you do the action automatically, and it won’t be a chore. It will be something that you actually want to do. Creating Long-Term Habits that Last Creating your trigger is only the first step in the process of creating a longterm habit. You first have to train your mind to trigger the action and then you will perform it. When you do that enough times (which is where the 30 day plan outlined in a later chapter comes in) the action will become automatic and you will no longer need the trigger in order to remember to do the action. It is just as important to be motivated when you are triggering an action as it is to remember to do it. Just because you created a trigger doesn’t mean that you are going to want taco perform the habit. That’s why you need to create a benefits list for every habit that you are attempting to form. Use visualization to motivate yourself to complete an action. When you can see the end result that you want in your mind you are much more likely to do the habit with or without the trigger. This is just a brief overview of how habits are formed. By the end of this book, you will have a much better grasp of the psychology behind habits and especially how you can create them with staying power over the longterm. Creating long-term habits that will last a lifetime does take a little work, but most of it is right at the beginning and the rewards for doing it are actually pretty great. Chapter 3: Setting Goals In order to start your journey towards success and begin developing successful habits you first need to have some goals. This is the destination that was discussed in Chapter One. Learning how to set goals properly isn’t complicated, but it does need to done the right way. However, the most important thing that you understand about goal setting is that the journey is much more important than the end result. This was discussed a little in Chapter One. When you have goals and you are on track to reaching them, you are happy. But your happiness isn’t going to become permanent when you finally reach those goals. You will be more satisfied with life and happier, but you are still going to want to set new goals. You will never be satisfied, and that’s perfectly okay. What Are Goals Then? So, you might be wondering just what the purpose of goals actually are then. You cannot be successful without goals, and you cannot form good habits without goals. You can try to force yourself to do something habitually, but without a goal behind them, those habits have no power and they will not stick, even if you do follow the steps required to get them to become permanent. Your goal is not only your motivation; it is also your blueprint. The goal that you are working towards will put demands on the types of habits that you create and it will shape the way that you change. Creating a List of Goals One of the best ways to set goals that will show you what habits you need to form to achieve the end result is to use the YEAR-MONTH-WEEK model. This is a style of goal setting that is similar to the LONGTERM/ SHORT-TERM model that most people are familiar with. However, YEAR-MONTH-WEEK is a much more effective model in today’s world, where we measure success in those clearly defined periods of time. If you are lucky enough to be reading this in January, then you have a great opportunity to create a perfect goal structure. If not, then you have a couple of choices: either set your plans for “the rest of the year,” however many months are left, or you can set your longest goal period over the next 12 months, no matter what month you start in. Those goals for the 12 month period are your long-term goals. They will be the guide that you will use to create habits. Your 12-month goals are going to be what you are attempting to accomplish with the habits that you create and you will see how they break down into those habits shortly. First, we need to set some goals so that you can see how the process works. Let’s start with some simple example goals for the 12 months period.

Some people hope to achieve success by becoming the first to walk on unexplored planets, others aspire to fly aircraft that have not yet been invented and still, others hope to become billionaires overnight. Without the requisite years of training or skills, these goals may not be possible and thus lack the realism I encourage. When we hinge our success and by extension our happiness, on achieving goals that may always be out of our reach for whatever reason, what kind of enjoyment will we find in life when we fail to achieve them? Bear in mind, however, that there is a huge difference between setting realistic goals and limiting yourself. That is why my encouragement to you is to set goals that are S.M.A.R.T and thus realistic. The acronym S.M.A.R.T means that our goals will be specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time bound. When we employ this kind of framework to analyze our goals, we are less likely to end up disappointed and it will be easier for us to stay motivated to work towards this goal. If your aim is to simply invent something great, sometime in the course of your life, that goal would neither be specific, measurable, achievable or time bound. Working towards a goal that indeterminate will lead you in circles and be very discouraging. If your goals are to be considered realistic, they must meet up to the requirements of all the other aspects of your S.M.A.R.T analysis. So even if you hope to achieve great things by the time you are twenty-three but have not really set a specific means to achieve this goal, you will not be very motivated to get much done. S.M.A.R.T objectives ensure that you direct your efforts in the right direction and do not waste time trying to re-invent the wheel or striking the air. Working towards something that is impossible for whatever reason will leave us too discouraged to achieve much else. But this is a very touchy topic for me because men like the great Steve Jobs, Ronald Wayne, and Steve Wozniak, did indeed achieve what was thought impossible by their contemporaries when they invented Apple Inc. So where does one draw the line between realistic and ludicrous? Ask yourself these questions: • Do I have the skills need to achieve this goal? • If not, how long will it take me to learn this skill? • Do I have the requisite time and energy to achieve this goal? • How much of my financial resources will I need to accomplish this goal? • Is accomplishing this goal going to have a positive impact on those around me? • Do I have the discipline required to achieve this goal? • Am I willing to suffer the consequences of trying to achieve this goal? • Are my family and friends going to support my decision to pursue this goal? • Will I truly think of myself as successful if I achieve this goal? • What will I do if I do not succeed on the first try? Answering these questions will help you determine whether you have the drive to accomplish the goals you have in mind. These questions are not to discourage you but to help you prepare yourself to become successful. The chapters that follow are designed to help you keep on track and stay motivated. Chapter 3 – Motivation Key #2: Occasionally Check Your Progress The very definition of a goal implies that it must not only be specific and realistic, but also measurable. When it is difficult to measure the progress you have made in achieving a specific goal, it is highly unlikely that you will be very motivated to keep pushing yourself to meet that goal. Just think about it, if your goal is to get to work on time tomorrow, you will constantly check the time at each stage in the journey. If you notice that you are running behind time, you will automatically start driving or walking faster because you know exactly how much time is needed to meet your goal of being on time. If that goal was a little less defined, for instance, if you decided that ‘someday’ you wanted to be famous, how would we know when to start speeding up? Motivation, that intrinsic desire to attain your goal, is what will ensure that you will do anything to achieve your goal. This could require that you speed up, slow down or even change course altogether. But motivation is a very fragile occurrence. You constantly need to fan the flames of desire in order to keep yourself motivated. That is why it is so important for you avoid the urge to check your progress too often. Checking your progress only occasionally is one of the best ways to develop a realistic view of your progress. After all, Rome was not built in a day. This is especially so for long-term goals. To help you get the point, let us revisit the illustration of your goal of getting to work on time tomorrow. If you were driving down a busy freeway and nervously checked the time every 60 seconds, would that help you get to work any faster? I highly doubt it. There will always be factors or obstacles outside of your control like the weather or traffic. Constantly checking the time will not remove these obstacles. At that rate, you may never reach your destination because you are too distracted by the time and may very well end up in an accident. While it is good to evaluate your progress in order to determine whether your current approach is leading you to a successful outcome, doing so too often will be both distracting and disappointing. If you have any children you will know exactly how soon, is too soon and how often, is too often. Children are not very good at delayed gratification. If you tell them you will play with them ‘soon,’ you can expect them to return every few minutes to ask when that will be. If they learn that milk will help them to grow big and strong, they will soon begin to gulp down as much as they can and check their height as often as possible. Often, they end up very disappointed because progress ends up being much slower than they expected. The same can happen to you. Checking your progress too often is one of the easiest ways to demotivate yourself. You will begin to imagine your progress to be much slower than it actually is or may condemn yourself as not really making any progress at all. This is especially so because you will make more progress on some days than others. How often is too often is a question that only you can answer. The nature of your goals and the duration of the time needed to achieve them will help you make this decision. If your aim is to lose 5 pounds in 30 days, it is only natural that you would want to weigh yourself daily. But if your goal was to lose a hundred pounds over the next two years, monthly weigh-ins would be more beneficial. It is generally encouraged that you check your progress a little less frequently for longer term goals than you would for those you hope to achieve in a shorter period of time. This does not mean you should not revisit your strategy to achieving your goals often. In fact, I strongly encourage you to review your strategy as often as possible. This is another practical way to keep yourself motivated because you will constantly be thinking about achieving your goals and it will become harder to be distracted by all the noise around you. Our associates are often one of the biggest distractions. Your associates can either weight you down or push you forward and closer towards your dreams. The next chapter focuses on how to surround yourself with the right people who will help to motivate you towards success. Chapter 4 – Motivation Key #3: Surround Yourself with the Right People “Surround yourself with the right people, and realize your own worth.” - Lucy Hale “Who you spend time with is who you become! Change your life by consciously choosing to surround yourself with people with higher standards!” - Tony “Surround yourself with people who see the greatness within you.” – Unknown Parents often spend an exorbitant amount of time warning their children about bad associates. I was no exception. To this day I can remember how my parents lectured me about the friends I kept, forbid me to visit the homes of certain individuals and carefully monitored my whereabouts. Being the rebel I was, I often thought this as overly restrictive and a huge inconvenience. Now, having grown up to see the life that some of these individuals now lead, I am truly grateful for their insight and guidance. But, we are all adults here and are free to do as we please. You might even reason that you are your own person and make your own decisions. But I strongly encourage you to consider your associates wisely for the following • Your associates influence the way you think • Your associates influence the way you are viewed How Your Associates Influence the Way You Think Everyone and I mean everyone you regularly associate with will have some influence on your life. This is true whether you are conscious of it or not. As humans, we are constantly trying to make sense of this topsy-turvy world by carefully examining the people around us. In fact, some scientists have been bold enough to put forward the theory that we are basically the average of the five people we most regularly associate with. The question now is, who do you want to be? If you choose to associate with people who are content with doing just the basics of life to get by, this notion can easily seep into your mind and affect how intensely you work towards your goals. These people will make you question why you push yourself so hard and whether your goals are even achievable. I am sure you will not find this kind of thought motivating at all.

Our dreams can never turn into reality if we just dream about it without any goals in mind. We can try to imagine ourselves being in the same position in our lives after wasting 30 years, using various ways to achieve our dreams, just to realise that we never really reached any goals to bring us closer to our dreams. It would have been a desperate failure from the start. To understand where our next few steps or goals towards reaching success, we should recognise these 6 essential reasons for us to set our goals in the right way. 1. Goals as the Force of Motivation Goals drive us towards our achievements as it acts as the force of our motivation. To connect to our inner force or desire, goal setting is the first step we take towards our achievements. In both short term and long term, it gives us a target to aim at, a destination we wish to travel to or even a particular number we try to arrive at. This is the point which gets us excited and passionate as we work very diligently towards our goals. While it is common that our efforts to achieve these goals are full of enthusiasm and energy in the beginning, it is important for us to know how much these goals personally mean to ourselves. In such way, setting goals which we know we would truly be passionate about in the long term will help us accomplish our missions in a more sustainable manner. After all, if we are not consistently motivated, we would suffer from the burn outs of trying to achieve meaningless goals. 2. Goals as Visual Representations of Our Dreams Imaginations, visualisations, fantasies or even dreams are not just unrealistic concepts based on our utilisable knowledge if we have set our goals towards them. Because of this, goal setting plays a vital role in ensuring our belief in our methods, our analysis of our results and our efforts in chasing after every resource needed. Instead of setting one goal as the only way to reach our dreams, we can conceptualise our dreams as a set of puzzles and the goals we set are pieces of puzzles we need to design, fix or even match to complete this set of puzzle. We can also regard each goal as a stepping stone towards our desired destination. As a result of achieving each goal, like finding each puzzle, we are closer to assembling the whole picture of our dreams (the complete set of puzzle). So yes, don’t be afraid to dream! 3. Goals to Track Progress Since some goals are the foundations for us to build on to reach another goal, arranging them to be accomplished first will be vital for us to track the progress of our work. As mentioned above that goals are like stepping stones to our main goal, goals also serve to help us track our progress in our work. This can be interpreted as accomplishing each goal will bring us closer to achieving our targets. Whereas achieving our goals means increasing our chances of succeeding, we also have to track our work in progress by assessing how a work can be done and the amount of time needed. These goals can also be interrelated to one another as we cannot progress with specific work if one objective or goal is not reached. One particular situation to exemplify such concept is the work of organising a birthday party for our family. The first step is always to send out the invitations and then confirming the number of guests attending. Without these first two steps, it would be challenging to arrange for the venue, the amount of food and drinks, the decoration and other aspects which will complete the party. The invitations and the number of guests attending are the two vital factors to the success of the party. In conclusion, some work cannot simply progress without completing certain goals first. 4. Goals as Promises to the Self The goals we have set to achieve are also promises we made to ourselves. In recording our goal setting process, it is also important that we ensure these concrete goals and give ourselves a particular timeline to achieve each goal. Other than that, these ‘promises’ also keep us responsible for every of our actions which lead us to the failure or success of our plans. With this sense of responsibility instilled in ourselves, this allows us to re-evaluate our actions and scrutinise the consequences whether in a short period or in the long term. One can definitely take pride in his/her success when recalling of the decisions s/he took 2 years or even 20 years ago. On the other hand, if one fails or accomplishes less than the set goal, then it is a definite sign to change ways to improve and achieve whatever the set goal is. 5. Goals as the Direction of our Focus Setting goals also means setting our mind, our heart and our soul to the target. In another metaphorical sense, we simply cannot shoot an arrow without a target. Upon setting our goals, we will know how, where and when to use our talent and abilities. Like a magnifying glass concentrates the sunlight towards the leaf, the leaf is then burnt. The sunlight is our abilities whereas the magnifying glass is likened to our focus on the target and the leaf, obviously, is the target. Without the magnifying glass (our focus), the target would never be reached despite the amount of heat the sunlight supplies (our potentials). We can only obtain this sense of direction in our journey to our dreams when we specify the goals right at the beginning. Sometimes we cannot avoid the fact that our focus might change and we have to maintain or to a desperate extent, defend our focus to achieve our goals. One of the many ways of maintaining focus is changing our lifestyles to reduce distractions such as declining invitations to meaningless parties or occasionally saying no to outing with friends. This reduces the resources spent on distractions and in turn, increases productivity for us to work on our objectives. One half of knowing what you want is knowing what you must give up before you get it. -Sidney Howard 6. Goals to Develop Our Potentials Our potential is nurtured through our progress in achieving the goals we set from the beginning. This means setting the goals which are direct opportunities for us to expand our knowledge, sharpen our skills and enrich our experience will benefit us in the future. Without such goals, we might not be able to develop ourselves out of our comfort zone as we are subjected to the comfortable and safe routines of our daily lives. Because of not setting goals or not having the suitable goals, some of our potentials never grow or are just locked within ourselves. On the contrary, the goals which we have set will enable us to challenge ourselves to adapt to new environments and new situations. Besides, setting certain expectations on ourselves would only convince us to do our best and expand our limits. Weight loss or gain targets, running time limit, business profits or even following a planned diet are all personal goals for us to challenge ourselves. Obviously, we reap what we sow and sometimes what we sow might be more than just the reward itself. Once we can appreciate the improvements we gained through accomplishments, we will also achieve the sense of self-fulfilment. With this feeling of satisfying ourselves, we can work on other goals with better motivation and energy. We might not even feel that the obstacles in the later stages are as challenging as before too. Chapter 3: Goal Crushing Techniques After reading the previous chapter, you probably have a better idea that goal setting would have eased or improved the pursuit of our goals. After all, we hope that we would definitely be rewarded with our goals for whatever efforts we use. As a start to our long term ambitions, it will be best if we can set our goals in the perfect manner as suggested in the coming chapter. The Bigger Now, try to imagine the success you wish to achieve in your life in the distant future e.g. the next 10 years. You could either describe this picture by writing, talking about it or even watching videos of people whose success you wish to emulate. The next step is to further refine the details of this success by including the details into the picture or description you have just created. The more specific, the better. These might be the ‘stepping stones’ or the smaller goals to determine how you can reach the ‘bigger picture’ type of success. Now that you have a rough idea of the success you wish to achieve in the future, it is time to set goals by writing them down or recording them in other ways.

Chances are that every single surface is covered in unneeded clutter and that you have a long list of things you want and that you intend to spend your money on and feel like you can’t quite afford the quality of life that you want or feel you deserve. You’ve learned why this is a problem and how it can make you unhappy. Now it’s time to start doing something about it! Follow these steps to begin your journey toward a truly minimal lifestyle… Reduce Your Clutter We’ve used the word ‘clutter’ a lot already and that’s because it really is one of the biggest problems. Minimalism doesn’t mean not having nice things, it means not having the things you don’t really need or want. As an experiment, I want you to head into any room in your house and go over to one of the surfaces – whether that’s a bedside cabinet, a desk or a windowsill. Now, take a look at those items on display and remove 60% of them. This is going to feel wrong at first. It will feel as though you’re getting rid of things you really like or that you’re leaving that surface too sparse. But go with it. What you’ll find, is that far from looking worse, removing those items actually makes your surface look a LOT better. That minimalism provides space for your possessions to breathe and it makes them stand out more. What’s more, is that it reveals the actual surface underneath and removes the visual ‘noise’ out of the corner of your eye that can actually end up creating a lot of stress. What’s remaining is now the top quality 40% of your items. That means that what you’ve left behind will be things that you really love. It means that the average quality of what’s on that surface will go up significantly, as will the average value. And those few remaining items will say much more about you and will attract much more attention – instead of just blending into a crowded mess. The best part though, is that when you then come to clean that surface, you will be able to do so by simply removing 3 or 4 items and then wiping. This has now become a 3 minute job, as opposed to a 10 minute job. And imagine what will happen when you apply that same logic to all the other surfaces in your home! Now go and do the same thing for all those other surfaces in your room! Remove Boxes The reason that removing clutter is so powerful, is that it provides you with mental space. Our brains are designed to pay attention to contrast and things that stand out and they do this by releasing small amounts of stress hormone. The more clutter and noise there is in a space, the more there is for our brains to process. This can be overwhelming and after a long hard day at work, it makes it very hard to relax and unwind. The fact that they also create more work only further enforces the fact that an abundance of items doesn’t add to your space. The same goes for a number of other items that you probably don’t realize are causing you stress. Case in point: boxes that you are keeping under your bed or on top of your wardrobe. This probably seems like a great place for storage, that will be out of the way and help you to keep more items. But the reality is that it will again create visual clutter and work. For starters, boxes under the bed and on the wardrobe get badly dusty unless they have a lid. But more importantly, they once again will play on your mind by taking up room and by removing those crucial areas of ‘space’ that make a room feel much bigger and much lighter. Just try taking the boxes out from under the bed and on top of the wardrobe and see if this creates a more relaxing and clean looking environment. Do the same for things on top of bookshelves, under coffee tables and stuffed behind sofas. And again, just think how easy tidying and cleaning is going to be… It’s time to start thinking about the negative space in your home as being just as important – if not more important – than the clutter that surrounds it. Cable Management Another important tip is to think about your cable management. Right now, you probably have cables running under desks, across the floor and just about everywhere else. Can you guess what these do? That’s right: they create more visual clutter! And they make your home seem much more untidy and disorganized than it probably is. There are a great many different cable management solutions, which range from using boxes to store your cables, to attaching them to the underside of desks and the backs of monitors. Get creative and you can create a lot more space! One In, One Out Rule One of the best things you can do to maintain an uncluttered home, is to introduce rules that will help you to maintain a more minimalist décor. One such rule is ‘one in, one out’. This simply means that every time you buy a new item, you need to choose one to get rid of. This will help you to keep a sensible number of items in your home that never become overwhelming and it will help you to save money – especially seeing as you can sell the items that you don’t need in order to get money off of the new item. It creates a space for your new item immediately and it also forces you to think much harder about the things that you truly want. This sounds like a harsh rule to make with yourself but once you start to see and feel the benefits of living a more minimalist lifestyle, you’ll be happy to do it! Getting Rid of Things If you follow all of these tips, then you’re going to find that you’re disposing of a lot of things. This can be a painful process but there is an art to getting it right. To begin with, you are going to do a big ‘de-clutter’ and get rid of a lot of items quickly. This will help you to reset your life so that you have a good starting point to work from. The first step is to throw out boxes of items that you’ve been keeping in storage that you never use. The rule that is often given here is to throw out any box that you haven’t gone into in the last 3 months (you’d be surprised how many that includes!). Remove anything that is sentimental or worth a lot of money of course – but everything else can be replaced if you need to! Likewise, remove clothes that you haven’t worn in 3 months from your drawers. Another tip is to get rid of these things swiftly. If you have items you think you can get a lot of money for, then these are worth selling on. But everything else you should give to charity shops or throw out. It’s a mistake to leave items in bags, to let friends and family go through them, or to try and sell every last item. This not only creates a lot more stress as you have to go through all the items you own (thus meaning a lot of people will put it off and not do it!) but it also creates the temptation to change your mind and take items back. This is not the aim of the game! Chapter 3: Enjoy the Freedom that a Minimalist Lifestyle can Offer Still not convince of the value of going minimal? Then try moving home! When you come to move home, having a huge amount of clutter and things you don’t need will make life much more difficult! Conversely, if you can reduce your possessions and clutter down to just the essentials and some things that you really love, then you’ll find that moving is a million times easier. You know what that means? It means you can really entertain the idea of moving. And it also means, that you can entertain the idea of putting all your things in storage for a while and going travelling for 3 months. Or how about putting your possessions in the loft and letting your home out to tenants while you travel? This is a very clear demonstration of how having less clutter is actually liberating. You are now free to travel the world and make more money because you have a lot less stuff! Having lots of possessions is like having a physical anchor keeping you in one place. When you reduce this unwanted mess, you will actually start to feel physically lighter! Creating a Zen Space Another example of how having less stuff can be freeing, is in the way it will allow you to reduce stress. In many ways, our homes are an outward reflection on our mindsets. When life is too busy and you feel as though it’s all getting on top of you, it can result in a situation where your home starts to look that way – you end up with clutter all over your home that you haven’t had time to tidy. You have washing strewn on the floor and you have washing up piling up by the sink. Papers are everywhere and the little time you get to relax, you can’t enjoy because your home is such a mess. Apart from anything else, you have to constantly wrestle with the feeling that there are other things you should be doing (i.e. chores). How can you get on top of things again if you can’t properly relax and unwind? Even with the best attempt at going minimal though, it is going to take a little time before you get everything just perfect and there will also always be times when life gets on top of you again and you feel stressed. One tip then is to create a ‘Zen space’. The idea of this space is that you are going to make just one space in your home that is going to be ‘sacred’. That means that no matter what else happens, you are not going to make a mess in this particular room. That in turn means that you are going to use an even more minimalist design here and it means that you’re going to make rules to keep the space clean – like no food and drink. The aim is to have one place in your home that is always calm, tidy and organized and where you can come and sit with a cup of tea and a book when the world seems to be in chaos around you.

This is not just about being able to do curls at a slightly different angle: it’s about things like the ‘Turkish Get Up’ which actually involves – quite simply – getting up. In short, the kettlebell challenges us to move in ways that we just wouldn’t do normally and this is incredibly good for our fitness, our strength and our overall ability to move functionally and healthily the rest of the time. Why is this such a game changer? Why do we so desperately need moves like this in our training regimes? The simple answer is that we don’t move any more – and it’s killing our brains and our bodies. Most of us will spend the vast majority of our day sitting in an office from 9-5 and then onwards to 6pm, 7pm or even 8pm. While we do this, we hold a single position: curled up in front of the computer with our back hunched, arms stretched forward in front of us and head craned upward. This position causes a huge number of health issues – it shortens our pectoral muscles, causing them to become tighter and less mobile, it forces us to develop a permanent hunch and it does even worse things to our legs. In the sitting position, your leg flexors (leg muscles that pull your heel up toward your buttocks) will be shortened, meaning they become tighter and harder to straighten. Meanwhile, your leg flexors (which help your feet kick forward), will become lengthened and stretched meaning that they lose their normal tautness and strength. This is enough to mean that your legs will now be exerting uneven force on your body and specifically on your pelvis. This will cause your pelvis to tilt forward slightly, creating what’s called an ‘anterior pelvic tilt’ – causing your butt to stick out in an unattractive manner and your overall height to lose a couple of inches. As you can imagine, this is far from functional and it robs you of a lot of movement. Simple things like bending over to touch your toes are an alien concept and knee pain and lower back pain become incredibly likely. The way we sit at work even ruins our breathing. Specifically, our hunched position prevents us from breathing from our guts as we’re supposed to and instead forces us to take shallow breaths from our chest cavity alone. This shallow breathing increases our heartrate and the release of stress hormones like cortisol and norepinephrine. In short, it’s enough to make us highly wired and tired at all times and means we don’t sleep as well, don’t recover as well and generally spend all our time about to snap (sound familiar?). We were never meant to sit. In the wild we didn’t have chairs, so instead we would squat around campfires. This is something that most people now cannot do. Try right now to squat down, while keeping your heels flat on the floor and see if you’re able to squat all the way down. Legs getting tight yet? These are basic fundamentals of human movement that most of us cannot perform, simply because we don’t use our bodies enough the way they’re designed to be used! Not only do we sit but we sit all the time. You go from sitting at work, to sitting on the train, to sitting in front of the couch! How many steps do you take in an average day? Do you feel like that’s enough? Meanwhile, our complete lack of challenging physical exercise means our hearts are weak, our cells are inefficient at using energy, our blood is thick and viscous and our muscles are next to useless. So how do most of us go about fixing all these issues? We hit the gym! But this actually makes matters even worse. The problem is that a lot of us seem purely interested in training our ‘mirror muscles’. These are the muscles on the fronts of our bodies – our biceps, pecs and abs – and they’re the muscles at the tops of our bodies. Of course this doesn’t look terribly good when you wear shorts but there are more pressing concerns. When you only train the muscles at the front of your body, it once again creates uneven pressure. Your hunched back and tight pecs get worse, creating even more of a hunch and even more potential back pain. Likewise, your abs are also pulling your body forward, as are your biceps. Is it any wonder that you’re liable to snap and injure your back at any point? And the way we’re training doesn’t really translate to real world strength. Think about how often you perform any kind of move resembling a bicep curl in real life – you just don’t! When was the last time you had to curl anything through a straight arc in your day-to-day routine? Real world tests of strength involve pushing heavy objects, pulling them, turning them, launching ourselves off of uneven ground and carrying items of varying weights in different hands. It is very rare for us to work in a manner that resembles the way we train in the gym and thus its usefulness is limited. The problem with something like a dumbbell curl is that it only uses one muscle group. In this regard, it is known as an ‘isolation exercise’ or a ‘single joint exercise’. Now combine this to a better move like a squat where you’re using a whole number of different muscles in conjunction. This is how the body is designed to be used and when you perform exercises in this manner, you are challenging yourself to coordinate your body and to maximize its potential strength output: this is hugely more valuable than training each muscle on its own through a limited range of motion. As you can see, traditional forms of training only compounded the problems that many of us already experienced and this makes a big problem. But the kettlebell can change all that, as one of the most practical and versatile pieces of functional strength training equipment in the world… Chapter 3: Getting Started With the Kettlebell Before we go into detail discussing advanced kettlebell moves, let’s first look at how you can add a kettlebell into your current routine. Right now, you probably train in either a home gym or a gym with paid membership. Or perhaps you’re just setting up your gym for the first time? Either way, you can very quickly and simply improve the quality of your set-up by adding in a kettlebell (or a few!). Let’s take a look at how to incorporate a kettlebell into your workout with basic exercises. Kettlebell’s for Leg Training If you’re currently working out from a home gym, then you probably have a few dumbbells and you probably have a pull up bar. This is absolutely fine for training the vast majority of your body but it sure does make it a little bit difficult to train your legs. Sure, you can use dumbbells to perform some squats and lunges but it’s awkward at the best of times. To train legs normally in the gym, you might use a barbell and a squat rack. You would then lie the bar across your shoulders and squat down to the ground. This is a great exercise because it combines lots of muscles in unison and because it allows you to add a lot more weight to your movements. Unfortunately though, most of us don’t have the space for a squat rack or the finances to afford a barbell, a squat rack and several hundred kilograms worth of weight! Thus we are left with dumbbell lunges. But by simply introducing a kettlebell into your home routine, you open up a ton of new possibilities and specifically when it comes to training the legs. One example is the goblet squat. This is a squat performed using any heavy weight that can be held in two hands – in this case you grab the kettlebell and hold it against your chest and then perform the squat. If you have a kettlebell that is very heavy (they can go above 50kg), then this is actually quite a challenging move. Plus, the increased control you get over the weight (due to the better grip), means that you can perform more elaborate moves. Likewise, you can also use the kettlebell for clean and press moves – with either one or both hands. Here, you are squatting down to the weight, grabbing it off the floor and then pressing it overhead. Later, we’ll look at the kettlebell swing and how this move can be used to train the legs and core and give you the perfect buttocks!

You Made It This Far 43 Sample Content Preview Chapter 2: The Real Truth About Fat Loss Despite the science being there to show us what really works, so many female fat loss and nutrition plans are based around principles that don’t deliver results, and pseudoscience that just doesn’t stack up. Your typical female is told to do two things to lose weight - 1. Drastically slash calories. This is usually done by minimizing carbohydrate intake, cutting down on fats, eliminating processed foods and alcohol completely, and even banning whole food groups such as grains, gluten or dairy. 2. Start doing lots of cardio. (And we mean LOTS of cardio.) The theory is that cardio burns calories, and so any woman who wants to drop body fat needs to pound the treadmill, take up jogging, dedicate themselves to evenings on the Stairmaster, or spend hour upon hour on an exercise bike. This isn’t the case. You’ll be amazed how little exercise you need. Once you’re doing the right type of exercise that is. Before we move on, and I go into how we’ll get you to lose fat faster than you ever imagined, as well as doing it safely and sustainably, so you experience no ill-health effects, and maintain all the progress you make, let’s just look at why the above methods don’t work. You Slashed Calories and Upped Your Cardio? Initially, doing this will bring about results. The weight on the scale will definitely go down, and you may even look a little leaner. This is because you’ve created a calorie deficit. A calorie deficit is where you’re burning more calories than you’re eating, so in order to survive and to have a supply of energy, your body turns to its stored fat for fuel. No matter what type of diet you do, you have to have a calorie deficit to lose weight. You can eat as healthy or as clean as you like, but if you’re eating more calories than you burn, you won’t lose an ounce. Even if you’re surviving solely on chicken breast and broccoli, while it would be hard to over-eat these, it’s still theoretically possible to gain fat if you’re not in a deficit. So you’ve been ‘dieting’ for a few weeks, and seen the scale move down, your clothes feel loser and you might even have seen some changes in the mirror, but pretty soon, a few things happen. For one, your hunger levels will be through the roof. This is because typical weight loss diets restrict your food intake so much, that you’re ravenous, almost 24/7. Combined with this, you’ll also be getting huge cravings. Because you’ve probably banned most tasty foods, your body’s pleasure sensors have gone into overdrive, and you’re craving something delicious. Much of the initial weight you lose when dieting and training like the above isn’t body fat at all. If you’ve gone the low-carb route, then your body’s stores of carbohydrate will be significantly lower, which in turn reduces your water weight. Plus, because you’re in such an aggressive calorie deficit, your body can only burn fat at a certain rate, and so instead of relying on fat for fuel, it’s burning up muscle too. Now, you might be wondering why muscle matters if you don’t want to be a bodybuilder, but we’ll cover that very soon. First I want to talk a little more about how detrimental the common way of doing things is. So your diet’s not going great, but how about the training? Cardio is fine for burning calories, but what you’ll notice is that pretty soon, your calorie burn per session starts going down. Even if you try to work harder, you won’t be getting the same results, and you have to go longer and longer to get it back up. This is because subconsciously, your body is trying to save energy, so driving your calorie burn down. Unfortunately, while often deemed safer than weights, this isn’t true either. Cardio (especially impact activities like running) can create huge stress on your joints and lead to injuries, particularly overuse injuries such as tendonitis. Let me ask you this too: Do you enjoy cardio? I know they talk about ‘runner’s high’ but apart from that, it’s pretty boring, right? Even if you put a podcast on, or watch something on the TV, it’s not the best way to get your aggression out, relieve stress and really make you feel like you’re working hard and blitzing that stubborn body fat either, is it? Now, when you combine these long, drawn out, monotonous cardio sessions with an extreme diet, things really start to go downhill. You may have lost some weight, but your body’s wondering what the heck’s going on. You’ve gone from feeding it adequate fuel and not exercising that often, to slashing your calories right down and getting your cardio in every day. As it starts to burn off muscle mass, you begin to look skinny and drawn out, and while many women say they’re not bothered about HOW they want to lose weight, provided they lose it - trust me, when you start seeing the muscle wastage and the lack of definition that come with the above approach, you’ll change your tune pretty fast. The longer you diet like this, the slower your results get. Why? Well that loss of muscle mass means you burn fewer calories each day, and by burning fewer calories, the size of your deficit reduces, meaning weight loss slows. To get round this, you have to eat less than you are at the moment. But remember those cravings? Well they kick in HARD, and it becomes almost impossible to stick to your plan. When the results are coming fast, depriving yourself and eating your same old bland, boring foods is bearable, but when the results aren’t there, it gets so much harder. To combat such a drop in calories, your body also fights back with it’s survival mechanism. You might have head this referred to as starvation mode, and while starvation mode itself is somewhat of a myth, there’s a degree of truth to it, though most people in the nutritional sciences industry refer to it as metabolic adaptation. This is a process whereby your body starts to down regulate all non-essential functions, such as sex drive, digestion speed, and even the production of some hormones, so you can start to feel very lethargic and quite unwell. Additionally, you’ll subconsciously move around less, and so will be burning fewer calories, making it harder to keep losing weight. (Can you see a pattern here?) In the end, it all gets too much, and you give in and binge. Maybe you’re out for a meal with friends, intend on having a plain steak or a chicken salad, but spy the burger and fries on the menu, and just can’t resist, so you have this. It tastes so good, and you figure that you’ve blown your diet anyway, and so you go on to have dessert, wine, and then chocolate when you get home, and before you know it you’ve eaten a week’s worth of calories in just a few hours. And then you feel guilty. This guilt starts to form part of a vicious cycle, whereby you think to get back on track you need to be even more extreme than you were before, with MORE cardio and LESS calories, but the same thing happens again, only this time, the binge comes sooner. Each and every time you do this, you’re making future fat loss progress harder and harder, as you’re playing Russian roulette with your metabolism. You make your physique worse too, as you lose a combination of muscle mass and body fat during the diet, but put back on solely fat (no muscle) when you binge or over-eat. Now, this is not meant to be a horror story. Far be it for me to try and scare you straight from the start. But I wanted to include this to outline how the way most women are told to eat and train to lose weight is just downright wrong. I also know there’s plenty of scepticism out there when it comes to female fat loss, so wanted to show you how I’m not just another guru who wants to sell you supplements or get you onto an extreme eating plan. I genuinely care about your results and your health, and in the next section of the book, I’m going to give you my overview of how you can lose fat fast, but avoid all the perils and pitfalls we talked about over these last few pages.
