When it becomes your automatic response. That mental image flashes, for example, your father leaving your family, and then the new interpretation comes in. When you can see daylight between how you reacted in the past, which is anger, resentment and self blame, to something more positive, then you're not trying hard enough. Keep repeating it until you see that distinction. This kind of thing is not going to happen over night. But the good news is that it does assume some form of momentum. Eventually, you start displacing your old mindset. A lot of people struggle in life because they are so obsess about figuring out what to do, when to do it and who to do it with. They obsess about these questions so much and for so long that they've lost sight of the most important question. Believe it or not, there is a question that transcends all of these. The most important question is, was and always will be “Why?” Think about it. If you don't know why you're here, then all the technical knowledge in the world won't do you any good. You'll still feel empty, directionless and purposeless. It will all seem, at a certain stand point, empty, shallow and pointless. It often takes just one bad day for all of this to come crashing down around you. It is no surprise that a lot of people feel lonely in a crowd. It is not all that shocking to discover that a lot of people feel depressed. They deal with these issues in varying shades of socially acceptable ways. In our society, it's socially acceptable to cheat on your partner when you feel a deep and profound personal existential loneliness. You fill this hole in your soul with sex and you confuse physical intimacy with spiritual intimacy and fulfillment. The same goes with drinking and, to a certain degree, drugs. But let's get real here: they're all coping mechanisms. Few and far between are the people who see this issue for what it is. All these are a reflection of a spiritual lack. Due to spiritual pollution, we have lost our sense of purpose. Spiritual detox: Identify your purpose I know this sounds shocking. But everybody's got purpose. That's right. You've been put on this planet for a reason. You're not just a random collection of cells. You're not just a cluster of tissue. There is something to you that is intrinsically important. I know you feel small. I know you feel voiceless, powerless, inconsequential. But the truth is you have a purpose. The problem is most people refuse to own up to this. The truth is we all have a sense of purpose. Maybe sex is your sense of purpose. Maybe drugs gives you purpose. Maybe making more money is your purpose. But the fact that you are acting and setting goals and planning based on something you can not see right now means that you are capable of living in a purposeful way. It may not be the right one. It may not even be optimal. It may even lead to dead ends and further frustration and depression. Still, there is that power to operate from a sense of purpose. Ask yourself this question. “What is my purpose right here, right now?” Is it sex? Money? Drugs? People's validation? Living up to your parent's expectations? Trying to impress other people? What is it? Now for the key question Ask yourself this key question, “Now that I have a clear idea of the laundry list of purposes that I've given myself, does it make sense to me?” I want you to wrap your mind around this question and think about this deeply. You know what's operating. You know what's animating it. You have to be completely honest about it. But now you have to ask yourself, “Does it serve my purpose?” How do you know this? What kind of map or compass do you need? Well, it's very simple. You just have to ask a follow up question, “Do these purposes lead to the life that I want for myself and my family?” If your purpose is drugs, does it lead to the life that you want for you and the ones you love? If your purpose is sex, does it lead to those things? Be completely honest with yourself. Let me cut straight to the chase. If you're reading this book with any kind of honesty, the obvious answer is no! You're not happy. You're feeling stuck at some level or other. You feel like a liar, a hypocrite. You feel defective, flawed. Now we're making progress. Now you realize that something is missing. Identifying spiritual pollutants What are the spiritual toxins weighing you down? Do you constantly compare yourself to other people? Do you open Facebook and look at the timelines of your friends and compare your life to theirs? Do you feed your mind with all sorts of junk like celebrity gossip and political drama? Do you check out your Twitter feed with a sense of envy or dread in mind? Do you feel left behind when you look at other people's lives in social media? Do they seem so much richer, prettier and more alive than you? Does it seem like everybody else has a tremendous amount of freedom while you are feeling stuck, frustrated and desperate? Do you constantly compare what's missing in your life with other people's brightest and happiest moments? Do you find it hard to listen to people sharing pain in their lives without constantly butting in and sharing how you have suffered too? If any of these questions resonate with you, please understand that they are symptoms of spiritual pollution. You are suffering from them precisely because you feed yourself spiritual poison. Identify your personal list of spiritual toxins Any kind of detoxification must begin with the toxins you're trying to get out of your system. The same applies to spiritual detox. Here's the problem. I can't help you all that much in this area. Why? Everybody's list of spiritual toxins is different. Some people are driven by sex, power and prestige. Others are driven by social approval and living up to certain standards set by others around them. Others are driven by fear, pride, stubbornness. There's really no one size fits all solution here. So I'm not even going to try. We're all different people from all different backgrounds with all sorts of different experiences. I can go on and on about the things that separate us. Unfortunately, these areas of separation and distinction play a big role in how out spiritual toxins are shaked and positioned in our lives. What I can suggest to you I can, however, suggest to you that you reach deep down inside and ask yourself what your spiritual toxins are. Sometimes, you have to ask a question in many different ways to get to the truth. If you've ever gone to a police interrogation or you watched detective movies, you would notice that they would ask basically the same question intended to get the same answer in many different ways. They do that for 2 reasons. First, they know that people are often confused. They mean to say something, but they really can't quite say it in the right way. So they have to chip away at the different ways of phrasing something until they're clear that you actually mean certain things. The other reason is more obvious. They're looking for inconsistencies. In other words, they're looking for lies and deception. You should do the same with yourself. Ask yourself the same essential question but in many different ways. Here are some suggested questions. Ultimately, they're all about identifying your spiritual toxins. Ask the following, “What makes me stubborn? What makes me cling to an idea because of personal pride? What makes me afraid? What makes me feel small and limited? What makes me feel unloved? What do I have a tough time forgiving?” Believe it or not, we hang on to a lot of these things. I know it sounds counter-intuitive. I mean, after all, who wants to hang on to a brutal memory of a father that used to beat you all the time? Who wants to hang on to that image of your father slapping your mother around? Who wants that? But the problem is it's like a train wreck. You know you shouldn't look at it. But you can't turn away. You can't look away even if you tried. It doesn't take a rocket scientist or a brain surgeon to figure out that none of this is doing us any favors. They suck our spiritual life and instead of living life with a tremendous amount of adventure, possibility, purpose and curiosity, we retreat to the tried and proven. We shrink back to the familiar. It's very lonely in the shadows. So come up with your list. Deep down inside, you already know the answer. Step #3: Let go of your spiritual pollutants If your Facebook feed is causing you to continue thinking in a certain way that makes you feel small, spiteful or vindictive, you might want to sit up and pay attention. Please understand that what you're feeling has nothing to do with your friend in New Zealand, Great Britain or in the tropics. Instead, it has everything to do with you. Whatever negativity you are feeling comes from you. You are just reading into that stimuli. It could be somebody else. It could be somebody living in Iceland or Green Land and you will find something to be envious about because it reflects what you feel is missing in your life. Similarly, if the people you hang out with tend to bring out the gossip in you or tend to bring out the critique or hater, you might want to open your eyes to this reality. If the kind of books and music you consume always makes you wish that you were somebody else, living a better life, doing better things with your time, you might want to think twice. I want you to come up with a long laundry list of the things that you normally do that trigger negative mindsets or things that don't spiritually sit well with you. Step #4: Turn your back on spiritual junk food I've got some great news, spiritual detox does not involve cold turkey. If you've ever struggled with trying to quit smoking, you know exactly what I'm talking about. Let's get real here. It would be impossible for most people to quit the first time they tried. I'm not saying that cold turkey doesn't work. It does. It worked for me. But you have to try again and again. When it comes to spiritual junk food or toxins, the better approach is to incrementally, or in a step by step way, pull back from the things that normally trigger you and make you feel small, petty and resentful. Do you spend a lot of time checking other people's photos on Instagram and imagining yourself living their lives? You might want to cut back on that. Do you spend a lot of time comparing yourself to your friend's travel photos on Facebook or Flickr, you might want to give that a break.

There are two types of Facebook marketing posts that can help you to achieve those goals. Composing An Engagement Marketing Post Let’s first create a Facebook marketing post intended to generate engagement. You can open the post with a statement followed by a question, or with a statement followed by a command. For this example, we’ll open the post with a statement followed by a question. One thing to consider when composing posts is that you have to catch the attention of the user in the newsfeed. This question has to be related to your statement and has to allow users to provide their point of view. This will encourage discussion in the comments section. Separate the question from the statement with a line by clicking on the “space” bar. Spacing the text in your post will help you to retain the attention of users. Now it is time to insert hashtags. Although hashtags are not used on Facebook as on other platforms, they can still help you to increase your organic reach on Facebook search results. In this example, we’ll compose a post to generate clicks and visits to our website. You have to open your actionable post with a statement, and to follow up the statement with a call to action. Because we are going to use this post to send people to one of our content pages, we’ll quote a fact from the article in our link. Then we are going to add a call to action to encourage users to click on the link in the post to learn more. Now, you have to always link to the external URL where users have to take action. There are two methods to add a link to your destination. The easiest method is by simply pasting the URL below your post text. Facebook will automatically create a clickable link preview that will appear below your text and that users can click through. This link preview will pull the image from your page or website to add it to the post. You can delete the text URL from the post after the link preview appears. The other method is by adding a shortened URL directly below the text. To shorten your URL, go to “bit.ly” in your browser, and then paste the URL in the “shorten your link” field. Now click on the “shorten” button. Click on the “copy” button to copy your shortened URL and go back to Facebook. Now paste the shortened URL below your post text. You might have noticed that larger brands and business-to-business companies use this method the majority of times they post an external URL. This is because it allows them to replace the link preview with a branded image or a video infographic. To apply this strategy, you’ll simply have to delete the link preview by clicking on the “x” icon, and then clicking on the “add photo or video” button to upload your custom image or video. You can click on “share now” or schedule your post after you upload your custom image or video. And that’s it! Use these two types of Facebook marketing posts interchangeably to keep your audience engaged and to achieve different business goals. Chapter 3: Creating Social Media Marketing Posts For Instagram In 2019-20 Hey there friends! Instagram is the world’s favorite visual discovery platform. Its visual storytelling format also makes it the perfect platform for marketing. Today we are going to show you how to create Instagram posts that generate lots of engagement and clicks to your websites and product pages. Getting Started Before we show you how to compose an Instagram marketing post, we need to show you how to insert external URLs that you can promote on Instagram. You see, you can’t insert URLs into Instagram posts. That makes it impossible to share content that is outside Instagram, so all engagement happens inside the platform. How to Set Up a Profile First things first: decide if you want a personal account or a business account. A personal account is useful if you plan on building a personal brand. So if you are on the fence for any reason, then starting with a personal account might make more sense. Getting set up is extremely easy. Download the app on a phone or tablet (the iPad Instagram app is currently extremely lacking, as is the website). Sign up using a business email to avoid linking your Instagram with your personal Facebook account. You will then be prompted to provide some details. Where it says ‘Full Name’, enter the name of your business. This is what will be displayed on your profile – and isn’t necessarily the same as your account name. The username on the other hand is what other accounts might search for, and what they will use to tag you using @YourUsername. For the sake of consistency, it’s a very good idea to choose a username that matches your profile name, and ideally that also matches your branding across the web. The aim is to try and make sure your brand is everywhere. So someone can enjoy your content on Facebook under one name, then visit your Facebook page under the same name, and then see you on their Instagram feed under the same name. This looks more professional, it avoids confusion, and it helps more people to find your content when they are looking for it. From here, you’ll also be able to add your bio and your profile image. In both cases, the objective is to ensure that people know from a glance exactly what you’re all about. You can include a link to your website here too, and it’s a good idea to use a shortened URL from Goo.gl (https://goo.gl/) or from Bitly (https://bitly.com) so as not to use up too much of your 150 character limit. The profile picture should be representative of the kinds of images you’ll be posting. Switching to a Business Account At any time, you can switch to a business account. To do so, hit the settings button in the top right of the UI while you are on your own profile page (it is located in the hamburger menu). Now choose ‘Account’ and then ‘Switch to Business Account’. Here, you will be given the scoop on what this means for your profile. Basically, you’ll be able to get stats and metrics from your users, as well as using the promoted posts option. You’ll be given the opportunity to pick a category for your business (for many reading this, the answer will be ‘blogger’) and to choose your business name and number. You can also connect to a Facebook page. Request Authentication If you’ve ever seen a celebrity or a notable brand on Instagram, then you may have noticed a small blue icon next to their name. This denotes that the account has been ‘verified’, which essentially means that it is ‘really them’. This has several advantages, firstly allowing you to make your account seem more professional, and secondly giving it a little extra color to stand out in search. This is very much worth applying for, as it will give you a number of additional tools you can use in your marketing. You’ll need a form of identification to do this, and of course some form of notoriety in order for Instagram to grant you the badge. Chapter 3. Gaining Traction for Your Channel Now you have an account, it’s time to start growing it. You’ll begin with your very first post, and from there the most important thing is consistency. If you go two weeks without posting a single thing to your Instagram, then any momentum you build up will get lost. You’ll find that your posts don’t show so highly, and that you lose the subscribers you had previously gained. How often you post is going to depend on your goals, the nature of your content, and more. But the basic rule for this is to post pretty frequently. The ideal is one to three times daily, and the average for most businesses comes in at 1.5 times daily. You should consider the absolute minimum to be twice weekly, but you should definitely aim to go higher. In short, posting more frequently means creating more opportunities for new followers to discover your page. Not only that, but it means that your existing followers will feel more engaged with your brand as they keep seeing it come up and keep getting reminded that you exist. Engagement is absolutely critical to success when it comes to internet marketing. Something else to consider here, is that in one recent survey, it was found that the average user misses 70% of all posts uploaded. That means that if you post an image, then only a subset of your viewers will see it. Therefore, you’ll need to post twice a day for the majority of your visitors to see at least one post. Going much higher than three times daily though can start to negatively impact on your growth. That’s because some of your images will inevitably be less successful and some of your visitors can end up feeling too bombarded by content. Choosing What You Want to Be That is not all we mean by consistency though. Just as important is being consistent in what you upload. What kinds of videos and images? What is the theme? How will you make them look? Aim to have a consistent look AND a consistent tone. One piece of advice that is shared fairly often, is to try and make your images look as consistent as possible on your page. That means that you should have a particular style that you stick with, and you should aim not to vary too greatly from that. Take a look at the feed of a particular photographer that you like, or a fitness brand. What you’ll notice is that all their pictures use a similar filter, that they are composed in a similar manner, and that they’re on the same topic. Sticking to just one topic is absolutely essential. This is why it’s so important to have a business account that is separate from your personal account. If you don’t, then people who follow you for your fitness pictures/motivational quotes/business advice, will quickly get fed up of seeing photos of you in the pub or photos of your dog. That will lead to people unsubscribing. This is somewhat acceptable for a personal brand. If you have a very successful blog or YouTube channel and people are interested in you personally, then occasionally showing a little bit of your lifestyle and personality won’t hurt. On the whole though, you should absolutely aim to post predominantly on the precise topic you have chosen. Think about your target audience – the demographic you will ultimately be selling to. What are they interested in and what will they respond well to? And think about what you are passionate about. There are lots of angles you can choose for most niches, so pick the one that speaks to you AND your audience. Then stick with it. Chapter 4. Growing Your Audience – Best Practices, Tips, and Tricks At this point, you should now have a business account that you are posting high quality pictures to on a consistent basis. Simply doing this will not guarantee success however, as at this point we still aren’t really providing an audience with any way to find our page! There are a few different tricks then that can help you to ensure that your Instagram account isn’t just a great one, but one that grows organically. We’ll talk more about promotions shortly, but for now these are some easy things that you can do regularly to ensure you see consistent growth.

The bad way is the route you usually take when you get disgusted with the fact that you have too many things all over the place and decide to get rid of everything. I know this because during a time when I was in the mindset to get rid of all the “clutter” part of it turned out to be my high school yearbook and my mother’s wedding dress that I was holding. Things that cannot be replaced and are gone forever. But such was my zeal to get rid of clutter that I discarded these items without realizing what I was doing. Like everything else, clutter has to be evaluated before you get rid of it. And you should also make sure to bear in mind things that other people can use, even if you no longer want them. Another example of how I got rid of clutter was when I moved from my home to a smaller apartment and had a ton of kids toys that my kids no longer used. I ended up with a heap of toys in my driveway ready for the garbage truck. These could have been donated to a number of different charities, but I was so overwhelmed that I just wanted them gone. The good news about this is that my neighbours had a field day picking through the garbage and getting themselves some free goods. It was particularly gratifying to see those who did not want to attend my estate sale in that upscale neighbourhood because they did not want to be seen buying used goods actually climbing the trash heap to get what I now considered to be trash. But that is not the point - the point is that the toys should have been donated and could have been had I been a bit more organized when getting rid of clutter. The good way to get rid of clutter is the way that I now use. I go through my home periodically and get rid of clutter in the places that is most likely collects like the closets. Those coats and other garments that I have not worn for the past year get tossed into a bag for the many organizations that come around to take these items for charitable causes. Some things, however, are not meant for charity as they are too worn , stained or have something broken, like a zipper. What I do when I want to get rid of clutter is to have two bags, one for items that are to be donated and the other for items that belong in the garbage. Clutter can consist of many different things in your home that you have no use for and you have been accumulating for long time. I used to deal in collectibles and went to many homes where clutter was amok. I’ve seen people who have had basements filled with old magazines and newspapers. Homes where you had to walk a narrow path to get through the house in order to get from one room to the next. This is the result of clutter piling up to the point where it got overwhelming for the person. There are two reasons why people tend to collect a lot of clutter. One reason is that they feel that they have something of value and continue to hang onto items that, in reality, usually have very little or no value. These types of people are those who are afraid to throw anything out less they find that they need it later. Many people have a compulsive disorder to keep everything that they receive, including junk mail, newspapers and other items that people normally throw out, just in case they may want to look at them anyway. Some people just like to hold onto junk. I have a neighbour who is like this and who routinely takes anything out of the trash that I put in. Needless to say, his house is a maze of clutter. And to make matters worse, it is a maze of much of my old clutter. The other reason people keep clutter is because they are too overwhelmed to know where to begin when it comes to getting rid of the clutter. Cleaning out an overstuffed closet seems to be a monumental task that they cannot bear to undertake. So the clutter builds and builds. Until they get to the point where they decide to chuck it all and end up getting rid of their yearbook and mother’s wedding dress. Most people fall into the latter category. The easiest way to get rid of clutter in your home is to decide what you want to keep and why. Obviously, things that have sentimental value or those that are collectible are kept. Clothes that you wear are kept. Other things, however, such as the kids toys that they no longer play with because they’re now teenagers, clothes that you haven’t worn in years and cannot wear even if you wanted to as well as knick knacks, old videos, music and books can be given to many different charities. Electronic equipment also falls into this category. Do you really need that analog TV sitting on the floor of your bedroom when you just bought yourself a flat screen? Many charities will not take electronics, so it is best to advertise them for free on a site like Craig’s List or just to give them to a neighbour or friend who can use it. I give all of my old electronic equipment to my neighbour and save him the trouble of having to go to the trash to get it. I have cut out the middleman with the trash when it comes to this person and now just bring it right to the source. If you know someone who collects all types of junk, you can make their day by giving them stuff you no longer want and save yourself the trouble of having to advertise to get rid of it. Take your time when you are getting rid of clutter. If it seems daunting, give yourself an hour to work on the project and then stop until the next day. Even if you spend a half an hour a day working on what to keep and what to give away or toss, you will start making headway. You do not have to feel as though you need to get rid of clutter all in one day. In our house, books and magazines comprise a great deal of clutter. Once every month, therefore, I go through the books that are keepers and those that I will never read again and send them to the Goodwill,. We have four subscriptions to magazines that no one ever seems to read that I bring to the doctor’s office after removing the address and name label. Newspapers get bundled up and recycled. Once a year I go through movies and music that we have hanging about and also donate these items to charity. We are a family that reads quite a bit, listens to music and also accumulates many movies over the course of a year. While some of these items we keep for future use, others are given to charity. People with little children have to be especially vigilant when it comes to toys, stuffed animals and clothes as children outgrow these quickly. Instead of letting all of these items pile up and clutter up closets and playrooms, it is much better to give those that are in good shape to organizations that can sell them for a low price to people who will be grateful to have them. This is a good way for you to teach your children a little bit about compassion and how to not want to hoard everything that they receive. Of course, there are some things that are sentimental to your children that they will not want to get rid of and those should be kept. For example, my daughter, who is now nineteen, still has the Barney doll that she had when she was a year old. Sure, it’s tucked into the corner of her closet in a box so none of her friends can see it, but it’s there and she’s not parting with it. It holds sentimental value. To put it simple, clutter is stuff that makes your house look like a mess and consists of items that you do not need and may have accumulated over the years. When you are ready to let go, make sure that you give them to someone who may be able to use them. The items that you keep should be stored in a place where they are unobtrusive and do not make the house look cluttered. You can look for traditional storage for these items or get creative. My home is tiny now, but I still have retained all of the things that I feel I cannot part with. I purchased cheap display cases for my doll collection. I cleared a shelf on the top of one of my closets for books as I do not have the room for bookshelves. I use a cedar chest that doubles as a coffee table to store our photographs. If you walked into my home, you would not see clutter, even if you opened the closets. Once you get rid of the clutter and have, as they used to say “a place for everything and everything in its place,” you will not only find it easier to clean your home, but you will feel more organized. You will know where to find things when you need them and not have to worry about inadvertently throwing something out by mistake, like your high school yearbook.

You need to romance them throughout your campaigns. Tomorrow morning when you start work, try taking a written (or mental) note of every time you stop from what you are currently working on to do something, then come back to your work. Keep a tally. Constant notifications from apps and texts can quickly distract you, causing a delay in getting your attention focused back on the task at hand. To help us be more aware of our phone usage, some mobile devices (like the iPhone) will track home many times you pick up your phone a day. This can be a scary number to see. Once you are aware of how many times you pick up your phone to check notifications, you can start making some adjustments to how often you pick up your phone. You’ve probably also heard people talk about retargeting without really knowing what it is. Maybe your Mum exclaimed at some point how weird it was that she kept seeing ads for a new heating unit… and just when she was shopping for a new heating unit! How did Facebook know to show her those ads? That’s some incredible coincidence! Of course, you and I know that this is not a coincidence at all. But perhaps you’re not entirely sure how precisely it works. The answer is cookies. Cookies are actually small files that can get saved on your computer via the browser. These files are stored there by websites, and that in turn enables the website to identify that user again in future. This is how you can stay logged into a website when you return to it later on – because the website checks for the file, which identifies you. This also means that other websites can interact with cookies placed by yours. In the case of Facebook retargeting, your website might leave a file on the visitor’s computer, and then Facebook can identify that file in order to use it to show you the correct ads. Any page on a website can leave a cookie, which means that you can not only tag users, but also tag their specific actions. So, one cookie might tell Facebook that a visitor came to your website, but another might tell Facebook that they looked at THIS specific product and then added it to their checkout but stopped just short of clicking buy. The cookie can even contain additional information – such as the time of day that they were active. Facebook retargeting actually allows you to do several different things with this basic functionality though, and uses some unique terminology to describe the various different methods. These can work in slightly different ways in some cases too. Many of these fall under the category of the ‘Custom Audience’. Custom Audiences Explained Custom audiences on Facebook are basically lists or filters that you create in order to show your adverts only to specific members off the public that you have somehow pre-selected. One example of this is the ‘Website Traffic’ custom audience. This is the type we just discussed – audience members who have visited your website OR your specific web pages. That allows you to use cookies to identify visitors at different points in your sales funnel, and thereby help to push them toward clicking buy. We’ll go into depth on how to set this up, as well as how to make it work wonders for you in a moment. First, we should address the two other types of option here. One is the Customer List. A customer list is exactly that: a list of people with their details. You will collect things like their emails, their phone numbers, their Facebook IDs, etc. You can also integrate this with email marketing tools such as MailChimp and simply upload an entire list. Facebook will then match those visitors to its own huge userbase, looking for users that added those same numbers and emails as their contact details. This form of retargeting works slightly differently in that it doesn’t look for a specific action the user has taken, but rather looks for leads that you have already generated. A lead is any contact that has had some kind of interaction with your brand and that you have the contact details of. Leads are important because they give you the option to take further action and convert them into customers. Leads can further be broken down into cold leads, warm leads, and qualified leads. The more engaged with your brand the lead is, the ‘warmer’ they are, and the more likely they are to be persuaded to buy from you. If someone has willingly and knowingly subscribed to your mailing list, then you should certainly consider them ‘warm’ – as they clearly know your brand and at least want more information about them. And of course, you can always create lists based on the engagement of the users. Some autoresponders (mailing list tools) will allow you to organize your lists based on how many emails they open, and how many links they click. Likewise, you may have one mailing list for people who are interested in your brand generally, and another mailing list for people who want to hear about news for a specific product. In that way, this form of retargeting can become just as highly targeted. Finally, the ‘App Activity’ option is for retargeting to people who have taken an action of some sort in an app or game that you created. This is a useful option for those marketing across multiple formats, but otherwise works similarly to the two mentioned above. There are other methods you can use to target your audiences. You might use a ‘Lookalike Audience’ for instance, which looks for potential customers that share similar properties with your lists and your warm leads. Likewise, you can filter audience members based on a whole range of different factors from their interests, to their age, to their geographic location. These alternative forms of Facebook marketing may be useful when used in conjunction with retargeting strategies, but are distinct and separate from that approach. Facebook Dynamic Ads Another great feature Facebook has introduced to make retargeting that much simpler, is its dynamic product ads. These are adverts that you only have to create once, but which will adapt to show visitors the products that are likely to be most relevant to them. Facebook’s dynamic product ads will employ a simple template which will show a number of different products, along with their details, depending on the data provided by the cookie or the app SDK you provide. To use this, you will need to create a product catalog, which Facebook lets you do by adding your products through your account. It’s worthwhile doing, as it allows you to effectively turn Facebook into a storefront! Chapter 3: How to Get Started With Facebook Retargeting Now you know how custom audiences and retargeting work, the next question is how to go about setting up your own retargeting campaign and get it up and running. What’s important to recognize at this point is that Facebook is a constantly evolving platform and is constantly updating its UI, it’s systems, and its features. That is to say that while this instruction is accurate at the time of writing, it may well have changed by the time you get around to employing it. That said, the changes introduced are gradual and in most cases, it should be easy enough to extrapolate the information and work out where things have changed. Getting Started With Facebook Advertising Before you can get started, you will first need to have a Facebook account, and it is a good idea to set up a Facebook page as well. To do this, you first need to set up a Facebook Ads Manager account. One of the best ways to do this is by making a Facebook business page. We recommend doing this as it will provide a very powerful way to interact with Facebook’s 2.2 billion users, and provides a hub that will be very useful when used in conjunction with your advertising. Creating a page is very simple: just go to facebook.com/business and then click ‘Create a Page’ (it’s currently found in the hamburger menu on the left, or on the right from a drop down button where it also says ‘Create an Add’. You can then type of page you want to create (local business or place, company, brand etc.). From here, it is very easy to then set up your page by filling out the information prompted – such as a profile image, a description of your business, a link to your website, a call to action etc. Setting Up Facebook Retargeting From here, you can log into the Facebook Ads Manager. This will show you any live campaigns you have going on, which of course will be empty if you’re signing up for the first time. Click the button that says ‘Create’ in order to get started creating your ad. But we’re going to rewind for a moment, because there’s a little more you will need to do when creating a retargeting campaign specifically. To get this working, you are going to need to use what Facebook calls a ‘Facebook pixel’. This is simply the name of the cookie, and it works by storing information on the user’s computer as described. This will be a small snippet of code that you will need to paste onto the HTML of your relevant pages. But don’t worry – if you aren’t sure what that is then you can ask your website developer. Better yet, if you have a WordPress site, then you’ll be able to use a number of plugins to automatically add the pixels to every relevant page. The pixels can either be added to ad campaigns that are already live, or can be used to set up brand new ones – so it is up to you which order you do this in. To create a pixel, go to the hamburger menu on the left and then select ‘Pixels’ from the category beneath ‘Measure and Report’. From here, the next steps are fairly self-explanatory. You can then choose to ‘Create a Pixel’ and then name and create said pixel. The pixel itself is neutral and won’t in any way contain any information pertaining to your audience. This makes it very important that you choose a sensible name for your pixel, so that you can easily identify it when you’re looking at your list of pixels and thereby apply the correct one to the correct campaign. So, for example, if you want to identify visitors who have looked specifically at a brand of trainer, then you should call the pixel by the brand and the model of that product. If you want to identify all customers who have been to your site however, then you might use something more generic like ‘Site Visitor’. Or you might create a pixel for a specific category of product, such as ‘shoe shopper’. These aren’t either/or decisions. You can create a pixel for all these different categories and then use them in conjunction to cast your net far and wide, then hone in on specific members where you have enough information. Once you have made the pixel, you can then return to your ad manager to create your custom audience. Select ‘Website Traffic’ for this example, and then choose the parameters that the site visitor is going to need to meet. You can actually add some other interesting and useful metrics in order to get more granular information without making a million different pixels – for example you can look for visitors who have been to pages that contain the word ‘shoe’ in the URL! Once you have built your custom audience, you then need to create your ad. That is where you can apply the custom audience to the particular campaign. Of course, you will now also need to go ahead and copy and paste the Facebook pixel code onto the relevant pages of your website. Where do you place the pixel? The idea is that you’re trying to identify specific actions that the user has taken, which in turn gives you specific information about that user and what they may be interested in purchasing.
