HILL'S CANDY RECIPES Ebook Sample Content Preview Cocoa and Chocolate The term "Cocoa," a corruption of "Cacao," is almost universally used in English- speaking countries to designate the seeds of the small tropical tree known to botanists as THEOBROMA CACAO, from which a great variety of preparations under the name of cocoa and chocolate for eating and drinking are made. The name "Chocolatl" is nearly the same in most European languages, and is taken from the Mexican name of the drink, "Chocolate" or "Cacahuatl." The Spaniards found chocolate in common use among the Mexicans at the time of the invasion under Cortez in 1519, and it was introduced into Spain immediately after. The Mexicans not only used chocolate as a staple article of food, but they used the seeds of the cacao tree as a medium of exchange. No better evidence could be offered of the great advance which has been made in recent years in the knowledge of dietetics than the remarkable increase in the consumption of cocoa and chocolate in this country. The amount retained for home consumption in 1860 was only 1,181,054 pounds—about 3-5 of an ounce for each inhabitant. The amount retained for home consumption for the year ending Dec. 31, 1908, was 93,956,721 pounds—over 16 ounces for each inhabitant. Although there was a marked increase in the consumption of tea and coffee during the same period, the ratio of increase fell far below that of cocoa. It is evident that the coming American is going to be less of a tea and coffee drinker, and more of a cocoa and chocolate drinker. This is the natural result of a better knowledge of the laws of health, and of the food value of a beverage which nourishes the body while it also stimulates the brain. Baron von Liebig, one of the best-known writers on dietetics, says: "It is a perfect food, as wholesome as delicious, a beneficient restorer of exhausted power; but its quality must be good and it must be carefully prepared. It is highly nourishing and easily digested, and is fitted to repair wasted strength, preserve health, and prolong life. It agrees with dry temperaments and convalescents; with mothers who nurse their children; with those whose occupations oblige them to undergo severe mental strains; with public speakers, and with all those who give to work a portion of the time needed for sleep. It soothes both stomach and brain, and for this reason, as well as for others, it is the best friend of those engaged in literary pursuits." M. Brillat-Savarin, in his entertaining and valuable work, Physiologie du Goût, says: "Chocolate came over the mountains [from Spain to France] with Anne of Austria, daughter of Philip III and queen of Louis XIII. The Spanish monks also spread the knowledge of it by the presents they made to their brothers in France. It is well known that Linnæus called the fruit of the cocoa tree theobroma , 'food for the gods.' The cause of this emphatic qualification has been sought, and attributed by some to the fact that he was extravagantly fond of chocolate; by others to his desire to please his confessor; and by others to his gallantry, a queen having first introduced it into France...

Then I began to experience more and more off days when I did not feel quite right. I thought I possessed an iron constitution. Although I grew a big food garden and ate mostly "vegetablitarian" I thought I could eat anything with impunity. I had been fond of drinking beer with my friends while nibbling on salty snacks or heavy foods late into the night. And until my health began to weaken I could still get up the next morning after several homebrewed beers, feeling good, and would put in a solid day's work. When my health began to slip I went looking for a cure. Up to that time the only use I'd had for doctors was to fix a few traumatic injuries. The only preventative health care I concerned myself with was to take a multivitamin pill during those rare spells when I felt a bit run down and to eat lots of vegetables. So I'd not learned much about alternative health care. Naturally, my first stop was a local general practitioner/MD. He gave me his usual half-hour get-acquainted checkout and opined that there almost certainly was nothing wrong with me. I suspect I had the good fortune to encounter an honest doctor, because he also said if it were my wish he could send me around for numerous tests but most likely these would not reveal anything either. More than likely, all that was wrong was that I was approaching 40; with the onset of middle age I would naturally have more aches and pains. 'Take some aspirin and get used to it,' was his advice. 'It'll only get worse.' Not satisfied with his dismal prognosis I asked an energetic old guy I knew named Paul, an '80-something homesteader who was renowned for his organic garden and his good health. Paul referred me to his doctor, Isabelle Moser, who at that time was running the Great Oaks School of Health, a residential and out-patient spa nearby at Creswell, Oregon. Dr. Moser had very different methods of analysis than the medicos, was warmly personal and seemed very safe to talk to. She looked me over, did some strange magical thing she called muscle testing and concluded that I still had a very strong constitution. If I would eliminate certain "bad" foods from my diet, eliminate some generally healthful foods that, unfortunately, I was allergic to, if I would reduce my alcohol intake greatly and take some food supplements, then gradually my symptoms would abate. With the persistent application of a little self-discipline over several months, maybe six months, I could feel really well again almost all the time and would probably continue that way for many years to come. This was good news, though the need to apply personal responsibility toward the solution of my problem seemed a little sobering...

Like the ill-fated Y2K, the year 2012 has gathered around it a fanatical cult following and a popular base of supporters. It also has its own fair share of dedicated detractors. As in the case with Y2K, the diverse 2012 groups divide along strict lines. For Y2K and 2012, the uncrossable void between the two disparate groups focused on what the year would, could, and did symbolize. As with Y2K, nobody – no matter how talented, knowledgeable, or “in tune” with the universe, knows with absolute certainty how the scenario of the 21st day of the 12th month of the year 2012 will ultimately play out. The following chapters of this book will look at the various proponents and scoffers of several theories and/or prophecies concerning 2012. It will consider the contributions over the ages from the ancient past to the current day to the major approaches or philosophies surrounding this particular year and its time. It will look at the fear-mongering “End of Days” scenario with its emphasis on a super volcano explosion, nuclear war, the Earth attacked by asteroids and meteors, and the usual fodder of apocalyptic times – flood, fire, plague, and pestilence. Attention will not slant all on one side. There are sections within the book noting the rationale concerning the “Age of Enlightenment.” The New Age philosophers tout this as being the real outcome of the arrival of 2012. While some accept the idea of a massive upheaval affecting the Earth and its occupants, most perceive this as a necessary tool of change. If the New Age or Era is to ever dawn, humans must go through this time of trial. For them, any cataclysmic event is merely the prelude to a time of peace, harmony, and understanding. Furthermore, many argue that the severity of the prelude and even the postlude to 2012 depends upon the actions of the individuals.

All of those kids who grew up on Mario and Mega Man are finally getting out of college and taking the industry into their own hands. Ten years ago, your options were limited outside of mainstream gaming. The indie scene was lo-fi and so makeshift and thrown together that it felt more like an open mic night at the coffee shop than it did like a legitimate corner of the gaming industry. Games like “Braid,” “Geometry Wars,” and “Immortal Defense” have changed all of that. These games are taken just as seriously as many major releases from established, multimillion-dollar companies. If this sounds like a naive way of putting it, then let‟s look at the numbers, the cold hard facts. Rockstar Games is probably the most successful video game developer of the last ten years, and “Grand Theft Auto” the most lucrative series. So why is it, then, that their Nintendo DS release “GTA: Chinatown Wars” only managed to sell ninety thousand copies in its first two weeks while Jonathan Blow‟s “Braid” has totalled well over one hundred thousand sales on the Xbox 360 alone? The game debuted on PC and has also been ported to iPhone, iPad and PlayStation 3. We don‟t have the total sales here because of the fact that it has sold too many copies to keep track of. “Braid” took a little longer to catch on, but we feel that the comparison is still fair. Where Rockstar has millions of dollars to pump into marketing (making the ninety thousand sales number a little disappointing), independent games have to catch on by word of mouth.

Budgeting Basics Resale Rights Ebook

Sample Content Preview A budget is generally a planned list of all sources of income and all statements of expenses. In its simplest form a budget is no more than subtracting what you spend from what you earn. And you can leave it at that if you wish, but if you really want to gain control of your money it’s going to take a little more than that. Effective money management addressed what you do with that simple equation. It’s about dissecting your spending and your earnings. It’s about looking for opportunities for smarter and reduced spending. If you’re working with a financial advisor on creating a long term financial plan, you’ll recognize this process as one of the disciplines and the foundation of financial planning. This is the process of cash management. For most people the challenge of taking control of your finances and properly managing your money can prove to be the most difficult of the disciplines of financial planning. Not because it’s the hardest to understand or it’s too complex. But where the struggle comes from is the need to take a serious and truthful look at your decision making in the past, your family’s habits and recognizing what’s best for you and your family. This doesn’t mean sacrificing everything for the sake of a spreadsheet with balanced numbers on it. But it does mean taking responsibility for your own finances and giving you and your family the opportunity to really enjoy life and be financially secure.

Crowd funding is typically done through the Internet to support the efforts that have been initiated by others. Crowd funding is used for a number of different things, including artists who need fan support, political campaigns, citizen journalism, and disaster relief. Within the pages of this book, you will learn exactly what crowd funding is and how you can use it to your benefit. Taking the crowd-funding approach is something that has been around for quite some time. However, these days, it is getting attention once again from both social and commercial entrepreneurs, especially with the advent of online communities, social media, as well as micropayment technologies. Now, it is easy to engage with others, securing donations from supporters with little cost involved. Crowd funding first hit the music industry with the Marillion, a British rock and roll group. Before the band even became involved, fans conceived of the idea to develop an Internet campaign. In 1997, an entire U.S. tour was supported by fans who contributed $60,000. Since then, the band has used crowd funding to record and market a number of albums. A few years later in 2004, crowd funding made it to the film industry. French producers and entrepreneurs Benjamin Pommeraud and Guillaume Colboc of Guyom Corp funded a film called Demain la Veille by launching a campaign for public donations over the Internet. In as little as three weeks, they were able to collect close to $50,000. This was enough money to shoot their film.
