What are Government Grants?
Government grants are specific amounts of monies set aside by state of federal government to give to people or groups of people to help them achieve their objectives. This financial assistance does not need to be paid back by the person or community who receives it. When someone thinks they are eligible for a grant, they must apply for it through the designated channels. There will usually be a special application form that must be filled out, giving all the details needed.
Usually a board of professionals and academics scrutinize the application to make sure it fits the criteria set down for that specific grant. A government grant could really be called a financial award. It does not consist of services, technical aids (though it may be used to purchase some) or advice, but is solely in monetary form.
There are many different types of grants available for a variety of purposes. They can be personal, as in the case of a writer involved in creating a work seen as helpful to humanity. The writer can use the grant money for living expenses while he writes. He could also use part of it to purchase some kind of equipment that will expedite his writing. An operating grant to an organization is similar. It may be used for operating expenses or a specific part of a project, depending on the guidelines set out by the grantor.
If a grant is called a project grant, then it is only for the support of a specific project and should not be used for anything else. There must be a beginning and end to the project, with specific objects and goals all the way along. Costing for each part of the project must be done accurately and records kept showing where the money has been used.
There are different types of project grants. Planning grants help with the development of a plan rather than the execution of it. A start-up or seeding grant helps a project kick off in its first few years. This allows the organization to concentrate on implementing the plan, rather than fundraising for it. A technical assistance grant may be used for such purpose as paying for the wages of a marketing consultant, while an endowment grant is often given to charities; they are to spend only the interest from it and must keep the capital intact.
Grants vary in both amount and time frame. They may be a small amount of money as a one-off payment, or they may be ongoing, with regular payments over a number of years. Some grants are for six months; others for three or five years, or more. In some cases the grants are renewable annually, so long as certain criteria continue to be met and funding is available...

Is Your Home a Target?
While there is a risk of break-in and burglary to almost any home, some homes seem to suffer greater risk than others. This is partly due to their location. The geographical area in which a home is built is in some cases more prone to robbery. Historically, poorer areas are more likely to have a higher crime rate, especially if your home is slightly more valuable than most in the area. But in some cases a middle class area that is next to a poor area might suffer a high crime rate.
Where your home is located is also a factor in being a target for break-ins. If the house is in an out-of-way area, then that can make it a target, as would-be thieves feel more secure. Thieves may see a house in an area where there is a lot of foot and automotive traffic as a high-risk area, as their activities can be seen more easily.
However, if the house is so isolated that it is hard to get to, then that would be a factor in its favor. Thieves are not going to go too far out of their way to rob a house because it will be harder to hide or disappear after the job is done. They would need a vehicle to approach the house and that would be quite obvious, especially if there were few other vehicles in the district. And of course, it is harder to find the house to start with.
A built up area where a loiterer would go unnoticed due to plenty of other foot traffic would suit a burglar. Here he has a choice of numerous homes, rather than just one or two. He can walk past or drive past with no one taking any notice of him. He can linger on the sidewalk without being obvious. And if he finds that there is a dog, or the whole family is home, he can move on to look for greener pastures without losing too much time.
A home that is surrounded by thick bushes and tall trees may be seen as easy pickings by a thief because all the shrubbery will hide him from both onlookers and occupants. If that home has a glass door, then that makes his work a great deal easier. He can simply smash a hole in the glass and unlock the door from the inside. Big windows also make it easy for the thief to break in. All these things should be taken into account when seeking to secure your home from break-ins...

Why Do You Want an Exotic Pet?
Pets are an important part of many people’s lives. They provide companionship for the lonely and help children to learn the responsibility of caring for another living thing. They often adopt the role of guardian to both the children and adults in their family. And some can help to care for their owners in cases of disability e.g., the seeing-eye dog.
Exotic pets are those animals that cannot be considered truly domesticated like dogs are. They may be popular as pets, but training them is difficult and most don’t come when called like a dog would. They may be rare in the wild, or rare in your own country. They are unpredictable when frightened and may be dangerous due to their adult size. Some easily bite if not handled with care; other are poisonous.
Some people like to have an exotic pet, rather than the usual dog, cat or bird. It may be that they like the shock effect on other people when they show a pet spider or snake. They excite attention when they show others their unusual pet. It makes them feel special to know they are one of just a few people in the world who has that special animal, insect or rodent.
It might be that they just want something different. They might feel bored with dogs and cats and like the challenge of caring for something completely different. A shy person will certainly have something to talk about if they own an exotic pet.
Or it could be that they have somehow gained a passion for a certain type of animal that is not usually classed as a pet. It could be that they have come into contact with an animal that is classed as an exotic pet and want to help preserve the species. It may have been found injured on the road and needs a great deal of care before being released back into the wild. Or maybe its injuries are such that it could not survive alone in the wild, so must now be cared for by a kind person.
Some people are physically unable to care for a normal pet, either due to a disability or because of where they live. But they still like to have a living animal to look at and care for. In this case, a pet like a lizard is easier to care for. It doesn’t need to be taken for walks or let outside for exercise. It doesn’t cost much to feed, take up much room or require much cleaning up after. It won’t scratch the furniture or make loud noises that might annoy the neighbors.
All pets should be properly cared for, so whatever your reason for owning an exotic pet make sure you find out its needs and whether you can care for it in a way that will keep in comfortable and happy...

What Do You Need to Plan for a Home Spa Day?
To treat yourself to a home spa day, the first thing you need to do is organize the children to be away. If they could sleep over at Nan’s that would be ideal, then you could count on having a decent night’s sleep as well. Wherever they go, try to have several hours free of both children and other interruptions. Take the phone off the hook or switch your answering machine on. You may have to organize ahead of time so that people won’t be worried about you not answering.
Your home spa day needs to be planned well in advance. Draw up a plan for the day, as well as planning what you’ll need to purchase. Things like facial scrubs, hot oil pack for your hair, essential oils, scented candles to create a calm and soothing atmosphere and food that you don’t have to prepare yourself. The weather may play an important part in your food choices.
If the season is hot, then food can be healthy and easy to prepare. Simply eat a full tomato, a cheese stick, lettuce leaf, celery and yogurt with your choice of berries or other fruit. Choose something that you don’t usually have to make it a bit more special. If it is cool weather, you may like to prepare a nourishing chicken soup the day before, or simply buy a frozen dinner from the supermarket.
Tomato and grilled cheese on toast is almost as healthy as a salad snack and more warming for cool weather. Don’t stress out over your food choices. Healthy is good, but trouble free is better for this one day. There will be plenty of other days when you will prepare healthy food. For breakfast you could choose to make a smoothie with strawberries, banana and yogurt. Or if you have a juicer, apple, celery and carrots are a great blend.
Make sure you set out all the things you will need before you start. You don’t want to have your hands and face covered with cream, then find your relaxing music source is hidden at the back of the cupboard. Place your bath salts or bubbles close to hand, along with the towels, spritz or moisturizer for afterwards.
If you plan on making your own facial or body scrub, prepare it the day before, if possible. If not, have all the ingredients on hand to make preparation easy. Don’t forget to pamper your feet with a soak in sea or Epsom salts. A gentle scrub with a pumice stone or foot scrub cream and moisturizer will rejuvenate them...

What You Need in Your Sewing Kit
A good sewing kit will contain many basic tools. First of all you need a good sewing machine, because you won’t get much sewing done by hand. Of course you’ll want an assortment of needles for those times when you do decide to hand stitch a hem. You’ll also need some spare sewing machine needles, small brushes for cleaning the dust out of your machine and oil to oil it with. Most of these tools should come with your machine.
You may also like to have an overlocker. Although you can overlock a seam with the zigzag stitch of your normal machine, an overlocker will give a more professional finish. It will also save you time as it trims the seam automatically as it overlocks.
Scissors are a tool that is necessary for your sewing kit. You might like to have two pairs, one for cutting material and the other, smaller pair for cutting thread. A tape measure will also be needed - and some pins.
A large space for cutting out is very handy to have as part of your sewing kit. If you are going to be making clothes from bought patterns or drafting your own, you will need a good clear space to work on. For pattern making, a dressmaking square will be essential. Somewhere to stow your patterns is also necessary.
A wooden top table is best, as the material tends to slip off those smooth, laminated surfaces. Some people use their beds as a cutting out surface and this may be all right if you don’t have a bad back. But much bending over a bed will not do you any good. Use blunt ended scissors so you don’t cut your doona or quilt.
A cupboard especially for sewing patterns and material would also be handy. This way you can keep everything neat and tidy without too much trouble. If you don’t have a spare cupboard, then several plastic baskets or boxes stacked up may do as well.
You will end up with lots of spare spools of cotton after you’ve done much sewing, so keeping them in a box, tin or tub will enable you to find the color you need easily.
A sewing table and comfortable chair are also necessary for the person who does sewing. You can use an ordinary small table if you have one, or buy a special sewing desk with drawers and cupboard space attached. An adjustable chair on wheels is the easiest way to get comfortable when sewing.
And finally you may need an extra lamp. Although sewing machines do have lights attached, there will be times that you need extra, especially when sewing dark fabrics...

What is Fantasy Football?
Fantasy football is a fun way of pretending that you own a football team. People get together with their friends and ‘buy’ various real-life football players to make up their teams. Points are scored by each player’s statistical performance in their games on the field. So if you and your friends have several favorite football players who play in different positions on different teams, then you can make up your own team using these players. Competition can be of two different types; player against player, or team against team with the highest total number of points winning.
If you decide to go with the new style of fantasy football, then each week you’ll be able to choose a team that you think will win. While you may choose a team every week, it cannot be the same team, but must be a different one for every week. Called ‘survivor pool’ or ‘knock out pool’, this type of fantasy football is very popular.
Survivor fantasy leagues is similar, with the owners being allowed to draft a new team each week, but each player is only available to them for one week of the year. Thus an added emphasis is placed on weekly NFL match-ups. The beauty of it is that should a player get injured, the negative impact is greatly reduced.
A different type of fantasy football is called Simulation Football. This can be played all year round since it relies on computer generated games and footballers. There is no reliance on real players or real games. You can play the basic GM league by putting together a team and then letting the computer do the biggest part of the work. Or you can opt for a more complicated version that is called “Create-a-Player” (CAP league). This is where top players put together a team of players created by other people. The main rule is that each player must be as good as possible. Different types of scoring determine the ‘top’ player.
Fantasy football encourages people to take a more personal interest in both the game of football and the players. Often, people who have become interested in fantasy football will go to see a game they would not otherwise have attended because one of the players are on their own ‘team.’ It has been good for the game, increasing general interest and with the advent of technology has become easier to play and much more popular than when it was first invented in 1962...

Elvis’ Birthplace
The king of rock-n-roll was born on Jan 8th 1935, in the small town of Tupelo, Mississippi in 1935. No small town now, Tupelo has reached city status and has many interesting things to offer the tourist apart from the little house where Elvis was born. Even though the family moved away from Tupelo when Elvis was just thirteen, there is a statue of him there, holding a guitar.
The house where Elvis was born is a simple, two-roomed weatherboard home that cost $180 to build. It now forms part of the 15-acre park named after its famous benefactor. Elvis, deciding that there should be a park for the children to play in, raised funds to provide it with a concert in 1956. Now 50,000 people each year are drawn to view both the house and the park.
The park includes a memorial museum, gift shop and a chapel, along with beautiful gardens, walkways and plenty of parking for visitors. A story wall containing original stories from people who knew Elvis as a child is one unique feature, while a “Walk of Life” leading to his statue, contains granite blocks for each year of his life. It eventually leads visitors to a beautiful water feature called the Fountain of Life - a complete circle that represents Elvis’s life in Tupelo. There is also a replica of the car in which his family left Tupelo; a 1939 green Plymouth. The museum is opened year round except for Thanksgiving and Christmas days.
Tourists can drive around the town to visit various places that are of significance in the life of the young Elvis. These include the location of an Assemblies of God church and the elementary school he attended as well as Johnnie’s Drive-in, a coke and burger place where Elvis hung out with friends. Shakerag is seen as an important musical influence, while Tupelo Fairgrounds is where he first performed. The shop where he purchased his first guitar can be viewed, plus other places through to the Milam Junior High, Elvis’ last school before leaving the district.
Tupelo derived its name from the native Tupelo gum trees that grow there. Though many battles were fought, won and lost in the town over the years, the converging railways ensured that the town thrived and developed. In fact it was the first US city to switch on a cheap, reliable electricity supply through the Tennessee Valley Authority.
A musical tribute, the Elvis Presley Festival is held there each year over the first weekend in June to celebrate the town’s most famous son...

What Do You Want Your Landscaping to Do for You?
Before you start any landscaping work, it’s a good idea to sit down and think about exactly what you want from the finished product. No matter what sort of state your backyard is in and no matter what size it is, you obviously want to change it or you would have no landscaping plans at all.
You may want to create an oasis of greenery in a tiny backyard, so that the birds and butterflies can have a place of refuge. If so, there will need to be many native bushes and shrubs and perhaps dense prickly trees or shrubs where small birds can nest in safety. Water and extra food can be provided if necessary.
If you live in suburbia crowded around with other houses and backyards, your landscaping plans can create a private place to escape from the crowds. You might not want to worry too much about encouraging wildlife, just so long as you can relax in private yourself. Tall shrubs or vines planted along the boundary will screen out other homes and give you the privacy you seek. The addition of a water feature will provide coolness and tranquility. Unless you love gardening, grow those shrubs and tress that are easy to maintain and have a long flowering season for the best effect.
You might prefer to make your landscaped area work for you in providing fresh fruit and vegetables for the family table. In this case trees will need to be kept to a minimum, as vegetables need full sun to grow successfully. Fruit trees can be grafted with two or three varieties on one base to give a variety of fruit. You might like to make every square meter of your yard count in the productivity stakes, but make sure there are adequate pathways throughout so you don’t have to tread in mud during those rainy days.
On the other hand, your landscaping plans may include clearing out all the trees and bushes that are growing there so you can get a good view of the harbor or river. In this case, try growing just a few trees - or even just one - in a position so that it frames the view rather than blocking it. This will give you the best of both worlds - your view and some cool greenery to rest the eyes. A small area for annuals or some pretty shrubs will add some bright color to the green for a visually pleasing effect...

Can You Handle Flipping a House?
Some people say flipping a house is easy and everyone should do it; others warn you to be careful, so what is the truth? Probably both. Everything is easy once you know how, so those who tell you it’s easy are probably those who have experience and been successful. Perhaps those who warn you to be careful are those who’ve failed, or if not failed, they’ve been caught doing something that cost them money.
To flip a house you need to get money and if you don’t get the right deal, it may cost you your profit. Supposing you get the right loan and you get the house, then what could go wrong? It may be that you buy the wrong house. It could need repairs that you were not aware of and they are going to cost you more than you bargained for.
It could be that the renovators you were depending on couldn’t come and held the whole project up. Or that there was bad weather that prevented your repairs from going ahead. Then selling took a lot longer than you anticipated for some reason. Meanwhile your nerves were getting shot to pieces because your deadline for selling had come and gone.
You might have ended up having nightmares about going into debt and becoming bankrupt. Welcome to the real world. The real world is where things do go wrong and need you to step in and make some tough decisions. The real world is not perfect. You happily got into debt and now you wonder if you really will ever be able to get out of it again.
Flipping a house is not for the faint-hearted. Another reason that could cause you to worry is that you intended doing all the renovations yourself to save money, but didn’t realize how hard it was or how much time it would take. You are still working your day job and by the time you’ve knocked off in the evening, you truly don’t want to start another job. Especially one that is so physical as painting and decorating.
Or maybe you got sick and just weren’t up to the task. In fact, you’ve bitten off more than you can chew and now you are choking on the remains! Or maybe in the time it took you to get it fixed up, the real estate market started to crash. All these things need to be taken into account before you start flipping houses. You need to have strong nerves and you need to not panic the moment something seems to be going wrong.
Do you consider life to be a worry or a challenge? Do you enjoy sorting out tangles or would you rather your life had no tangles. If you want a free-from-worry existence then maybe flipping houses is not for you. But if you enjoy a challenge, then maybe this is just what your need to keep life interesting...

What Makes Cave Exploring so Exciting?
Most people yearn for a little excitement in their lives. Many take up a sport they are good at or learn a new one. Some people even do extreme sports like bungee jumping to get that adrenaline rush. Others take up exploring caves. They find it exciting because there is an element of danger. If everything is not done properly they could fall or get lost in the dark recesses of the cave.
It’s exciting because each one must depend on the others in the team for safety. This kind of dependence forges a bond that is hard to explain for those who have not experienced it. It’s similar to the bonds that come from fighting in a war. Sharing danger and depending on your team member makes people feel close to each other.
Another aspect of caving that many find exciting is that you have a real chance of finding a place that man has never been in before. In a world where there is hardly anything new to explore, caving offers the chance to become an explorer - sometimes without having to travel to the ends of the earth to find new ground.
Exploring new ground on top of the earth can be spoiled by the boundaries that countries create. You may have to get permission to enter the country - or you may be refused permission, so that will spoil your adventure before it starts. With caving, you can usually find a cave to explore without getting permission from what may be a hostile or reluctant government. Exploring forests pose a danger of snakes and other poisonous wildlife - exploring caves offer the sort of danger that can be controlled or minimized by proper preparation, so some people see it as a safer alternative.
Caving is made more exciting by the mere fact that it is done in darkness. Once daylight is left behind, the only light comes from the explorer’s torch. Wriggling down into those tiny cracks knowing that there are thousands of tonnes of rock over your head really makes the caver feel the immensity of nature. Caving is so different to the normal sport or leisure time activity that it attracts those people who are looking for a new pastime.
While many caves have been explored by others, there is always the chance that you might find a different passage way or tunnel that has been missed. There are many wonderful sights to see hidden away below the earth’s surface. Stalactites and stalagmites may be just around the next corner - you’ll never know until you go!...
