Chapter One – An Introduction to Yoga and its Health Benefits

Everyone knows that yoga is good for our physical and mental health – don’t they?

Most of us think that yoga has been practiced for ever; that to do yoga well you have to be stick thin; that you have to be able to turn yourself inside out, stand on your head, that you have to understand strange eastern languages, follow the teachings of Buddha, or get a Guru with a difficult to pronounce name.

Well, none of this is really true. Nor do you have to live on lentils and rice, drink only water, and manage to leap from standing on one leg from one side of a lake to another.

It is true, though, that yoga has been practiced since before Christ was born.  It is also true that it is extremely good for you, and that it can help our general health, help teach us to relax and to feel less stressed, and to sleep better.

It is also extremely good for learning how to strengthen muscles in those ‘risky’ places, like the neck and lower back, and therefore helps reduce any pain in those areas of the body.

It also enables you to massage your internal organs, and, combined with the increased oxygen flow through your body, helps every part of you function more effectively, more healthily, and therefore, hopefully, for longer.

Yoga has evolved from ancient teachings, arguably going back as far as the Stone Age.  Originally a set of rituals and ceremonies to help bind societies, Yoga has emerged through time from its group emphasis to become a personal and individual journey.  This journey is never the same for two people, and always unique to ourselves.  And almost without exception, it is a journey that is enjoyable, rewarding, and empowering.
