Does Home Schooling Work?

Most of us are accustomed to learning everything we need to know in school. But now, alternative forms of learning are available and one of them is home schooling. But is home schooling effective?

Well a lot of people believe that home schooling works because it is growing at a rate of 11% to 40% annually in the United States. More than 10 years ago, there were approximately 850,000 being schooled at home, so you can just imagine how many families are participating in the program now.

Several studies have shown that children who are home schooled regularly outperform their peers in both public and private schools. Such studies have not only been done in the US but in Canada and other countries as well.

Here in the US, home schooled students are ranked between the 82nd and the 92nd percentile in reading and reached the 85th percentile in math. The overall tests scores show a different figure, showing that children who are home schooled are placed between the 75th and 85th percentiles.

Believe it or not, this is still higher than what public school students scored.

Results showed that public school students are only in the 50th percentile while private school students’ scores ranged from the 65th to the 75th percentile.

Such results are also impressive when their scores were tabulated many scored higher than public and private school students that are trying to enter college.

But are higher test scores the only gauge to say that home schooling works? The answer is no because other studies have shown that children who are home schooled are generally more sociable than people who went to public or private school. Further research shows that these individuals are more independent when they get older.
