The bird flu is a virus that has been talked about quite heavily throughout the news media.  That is because, in part, to how deadly this virus has become as well as how powerful it has become.  Like any other type of virus, the bird flu can and is expected to mutate into something that is much more deadly and quite probably will do a lot of damage to the world if it does in fact mutate.  Do you know about it?  Do you know what the symptoms are and the likelihood that it can in fact do this mutation?  If you do not, you should take the time to learn a bit more about the bird flu.

The bird flu, or H5N1 is a strain of the influenza A virus.  This is a type of virus that is commonly found, in different forms.  This particular strain is very deadly.  Right now, has a mortality rate of 100% in birds that have it and it has a mortality rate of nearly 60% in humans that have contracted the virus.  It has been estimated that millions of birds in southeast Asia have been killed by the virus or have been killed to stop the spread of the virus.  About 200 people worldwide have died from the bird flu as of yet.  That number is likely to climb.

Right now, the bird flu is not as large of a threat to the human population as it can be.  Like any virus, though, the bird flu can and probably will become something that mutates into a virus that will move into the human population.  The bird flu is only transmitted through birds, currently.  That means that you can only get the bird flu now if you have direct contact with an infected bird.  Most scientists do believe that the bird flu will in fact mutate so that it can travel between a human to human within the next several years.
