Since hypothyroidism, means that the thyroid gland is failing to secrete enough thyroid hormone to sustain the body’s metabolic function, the logical method of treatment involves replacing the hormone with a synthetic one. The hormone therapy takes some time to stabilize in some patients, so it’s important that a patient report to his or her doctor on a routine basis during the first month of treatment in order for the health care provider to evaluate the effectiveness of the therapy.

Once hormone therapy is in place, some patients may begin to feel better within one to two weeks, but it is not unusual for it to take a month or two before symptoms of hypothyroidism disappear completely. For this reason, it’s important that a patient review with his or her doctor how he feels and any symptoms he has at each visit. This allows the doctor to evaluate the course of treatment and determine if a medication adjustment is required. It also tells him whether he needs to run another TSH blood test in order to find out if the medication is working or if another type of medication or alternative treatment is needed. Each patient is different, and what works for one person may not work for another, so your doctor must evaluate you on an individual basis.

If you are pregnant, be assured that since the medication involves the replacement of a hormone that your body already produces, there is no harm to you or your unborn child if you take the T4 hormone during pregnancy. On the other hand, if you were taking medication for an underactive thyroid prior to becoming pregnant, it is quite possible that the dosage will need to be increased during pregnancy. Your doctor will order TSH blood tests to measure the hormone levels in your blood and determine how much medication you need for your hormone therapy during pregnancy.
