Finding out if you have a truly unique invention is something that is necessary.  If you submit an application for a patent, you will need to say that you have provided all of the necessary information in research.  The US Patent and Trademark Office will also do the searching to find out if there is enough difference in what you have invented against numerous other inventions out there..  What you will find is that there is always going to be the chance that you hold something that is brand new, the winning ticket and your very own patent is almost in your hands.  Take the time necessary to find out if your patent is one that can be had.  If so, take the necessary steps to insuring that you are the property owner.
