Although Psychiatrists have been using electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) for decades, there is still a great deal of debate on the safety of this procedure as a viable treatment option for mental disorders including: clinical depression, bipolar depression, bipolar mania, schizoaffective disorder, schizophrenia, dementia, and Parkinson’s disease.
Because the administration of ECT is such a commonplace and controversial subject and, since I have personal interest as both an Emergency Medical Technician, former PreMed student, as well as a mental health consumer with firsthand experience, I decided to research the scientific facts as well as professional opinions, clinical studies, and consumer experiences associated with ECT.
It’s my hope that by providing a glimpse from both perspectives, anyone who may be considering ECT will be better equipped to make an informed decision that is best for them, and his or her situation.Other Details
