1. Keeping Birds in a Cage

Most birds kept as pets are caged or put in an aviary. Even though an aviary is a bigger enclosure it is still a cage. To choose the correct cage for your bird it is important to consider the bird’s needs as a primary factor. Most bird owners make the mistake of considering how the cage will fit in the space chosen, or even how well it matches with the décor of their room. Rather, consider the comfort of the occupant of the cage – the bird who must live there.

Generally, cages used in pet stores to house the birds are way too small because stores are concerned with optimizing space utilization. It would be wrong to judge the size of the cage by what you see the bird in, inside the store. Birds are highly intelligent and were made with wings for a purpose; to fly. They have to be able to enjoy a certain amount of freedom in the face of their captivity.

Aviaries are very large enclosures and the height is measured in feet rather than inches or centimeters. In fact there are aviaries tall enough for bird owners to walk into. These over large cages can be conventional ones fixed to the ground or suspended, with only the supports fixed to the ground. Such large cages allow the birds to enjoy a bit of freedom, letting them fly at will around the enclosure. The aviaries are made of galvanized steel mesh, wood or PVC. You can buy a prefabricated cage and assemble it yourself or have one built from scratch.

Genuine bird lovers will always make the aviary as large as possible, filling it with greenery and some kind of water feature for the birds to enjoy a more natural environment. The thing to bear in mind is that different species and sizes of birds require differently sized bars to keep them from escaping. Chicken wire is good for outdoor birds like pheasants among others, but you could use stucco wire as well. It looks better than chicken wire does.

When you plan on keeping a bird in a cage you have to first find the right location for the cage. It should not be out in the full heat of the summer sun, but have some shade and shelter. The next important factor to be considered is the size of the cage. Remember that size does not only pertain to holding the bird inside in comfort. Size has to include your consideration of food bowls, water bowl, perches and toys among other things. The perches need to be of different sizes and varying textures. There are perches for keeping nails trim and perches that are finely surfaced for resting.
