CHAPTER 1

Understanding Debt

Everyone has most likely experienced debt at some time or another, so you are certainly not alone. Ultimately, it is the way in which we handle our debt that matters the most. If you are reading this book on the subject of debt elimination, it is probably safe to say that you are in debt and are concerned about your level of debt. The amount of your debt is really a negligible point. While your level of debt may not be the same as someone else’s, if you had reached the point that the only thing you can think of is your debt and how you will make your monthly payments, then you are probably in over your head.

Facing Reality

In addressing how to get out of debt, it is first important to take a look at how you arrived at this situation in the first place. For most people who are in high levels of debt today, the primary problem can usually be traced back to the belief that we need things now rather than later and we cannot live without the numerous gadgets that are available now to make our lives so much easier.

In many ways this is just a part of living in such modern times. There is no denying that there are many gadgets available today that would certainly make our lives easier and save time, but it should also be understood that we really can live without a great majority of these gadgets and still manage to be quite happy.

Consider the number of gadgets you currently have residing on or in your kitchen cabinets right now. Do you really need every single one of them? While it might be nice to have a grinder and a juicer and a blender and a food processor, do you really need most of them? How often do you even use them?

At the same time, consider how often you run out to grab an expensive gourmet coffee or treat yourself to dinner or lunch out? What about entertainment? How many times do you tell yourself you can’t miss the latest blockbuster at the theater?

Does any of this sound familiar to you? If so, you are probably much like a large percentage of the population. It is precisely these habits that have forced so many people into high levels of debt. While these things are all very nice they are indelibly linked to indiscriminate spending, unless you have an endless source of income, and for most people it is the reason they have found themselves in financial trouble.

This can be difficult for many people to accept and yet it is an absolute must in order to understand how to get out of debt and stay that way. Unless you are willing to analyze how you found yourself in financial trouble, you will not be able to slash your budget in order to pay off your existing debt and form new, healthier habits that will assist you in staying out of debt.
