What are Government Grants?

Government grants are specific amounts of monies set aside by state of federal government to give to people or groups of people to help them achieve their objectives. This financial assistance does not need to be paid back by the person or community who receives it. When someone thinks they are eligible for a grant, they must apply for it through the designated channels. There will usually be a special application form that must be filled out, giving all the details needed.

Usually a board of professionals and academics scrutinize the application to make sure it fits the criteria set down for that specific grant. A government grant could really be called a financial award. It does not consist of services, technical aids (though it may be used to purchase some) or advice, but is solely in monetary form.

There are many different types of grants available for a variety of purposes. They can be personal, as in the case of a writer involved in creating a work seen as helpful to humanity. The writer can use the grant money for living expenses while he writes. He could also use part of it to purchase some kind of equipment that will expedite his writing. An operating grant to an organization is similar. It may be used for operating expenses or a specific part of a project, depending on the guidelines set out by the grantor.

If a grant is called a project grant, then it is only for the support of a specific project and should not be used for anything else. Costing for each part of the project must be done accurately and records kept showing where the money has been used.

There are different types of project grants. Planning grants help with the development of a plan rather than the execution of it. A start-up or seeding grant helps a project kick off in its first few years. This allows the organization to concentrate on implementing the plan, rather than fundraising for it. A technical assistance grant may be used for such purpose as paying for the wages of a marketing consultant, while an endowment grant is often given to charities; they are to spend only the interest from it and must keep the capital intact.

Grants vary in both amount and time frame. They may be a small amount of money as a one-off payment, or they may be ongoing, with regular payments over a number of years. Some grants are for six months; others for three or five years, or more. In some cases the grants are renewable annually, so long as certain criteria continue to be met and funding is available…
