Looking Forward

I did consider doing a 2006 review but, let’s face it, looking back is dull and, at best, will leave you brooding over your mistakes. It’s far more fun to look forward and set some iron-clad goals for the next 12 months as well as make some predictions about forthcoming trends.

Refine Your Business

This is, I believe, the most useful and profitable exercise you can do. Get a pen and paper and make a list of all the daily, weekly and monthly jobs that you have to do.

Once you’ve done that, work out which tasks are making you money or providing valuable education and which ones… aren’t. Decide now to strip off as many of these unprofitable tasks as you can. Even if you enjoy doing them, or you’re proud of them, if they’re not adding to or helping you to grow your business – let them go.

The hard part is being ruthless enough to cut free from jobs you may have been doing for a long time, but that have never really accomplished what you originally intended them to.

Once, you’ve done that, look at the remaining tasks and outsource as many of them as possible.

Don’t dismiss this step simply because you’re not used to outsourcing. Your time is valuable and if a job is simple, but time consuming, you will be able to find someone else to take care of it for a very reasonable fee.

Finally, make a separate list of all the projects that you are currently working on. Pick one or two of the most profitable projects to be your focus and for all the other projects… either let them go or put them into hibernation.

The result is that when you start 2007, you will have a lot more time available to focus on the one or two projects that are your most profitable. Use the extra time to build these up until they are making a sustainable income.
