WHAT ARE RADIO CONTROL VEHICLES?

Almost everyone has driven by a park and seen adults playing with what look like toys that roar, fly, soar and float. They have a control in their hands and are pushing buttons, turning knobs and pulling out antennas. There might be some children around but that is often not true.

So what is going on? It’s the exciting world of radio control vehicles! At one time these vehicles were simple small toys like slow moving boats or cars or low flying planes that seemed to crash more often then they ran or flew. But all that has changed with the new technology and new materials. There are radio control dragsters that have been clocked at speeds of 70 miles an hour though that is not typical for most of these vehicles. You can do acrobatic moves with the airplanes and even some beginner units can fly a half mile away and over 100 feet in the air.
The question still remains: What are radio control vehicles?

DEFINITION OF RADIO CONTROL VEHICLES

Radio control vehicles are scale model versions of full sized vehicles that are controlled through the manipulation of a wireless controller or transmitter held in the hand. The controller sends a radio signal to the receiver in the vehicle and that signal tells the car, boat or aircraft how and where to move and at what speed.

The controller has a specific frequency that only the vehicle’s receiver will respond to. That’s why you can find all those adults in the park operating their radio control vehicles without affecting the others as long as they follow certain guidelines you will read about in this book.
By the way, in the hobby and competition radio control vehicle industry, the acronym RC is usually used. RC naturally stands for “radio control. If you are a beginner to radio control vehicles, one of the first steps is learning basic vocabulary which will be covered in a following chapter.
