1. What Age Should Your Child Start School?

Most parents send their children to school when they are five and although this seems to have become the custom, it is not mandatory. Parents may not realize that it is not the law for children of that age to attend school; rather six is the legal age, depending on the state or country of residence.

It is important to know that there are cut off dates that determine when your child is able to start kindergarten. Although some schools start in the beginning of August, as long as your child will have a birthday and turn five before the first of September, he or she is usually accepted into kindergarten. This is something that you should check on in your area to know for sure though. Even if your child will be five, you may not feel that they are ready. Take certain measures to ensure their readiness to start school.

First of all, you will want to know if your child is mature enough to start school. Do not get me wrong, kids will be kids and you cannot expect a five year old to be very mature. You will have to look for certain signs from your child to know if their maturity level is that of a child on track for succeeding in kindergarten. Maturity is not usually the best thing to judge, because the maturity of a five year old is usually not very high. They will still be at a very playful age and not have very high ability to follow directions very well.

The best thing to pay attention to when determining if your child is ready to start school is whether they can speak well for their age. This is very important in making sure that your child will succeed in school. If they are behind in their speech, then you should consider having them see a speech therapist to ensure that they are where they need to be by the time school starts. Being made fun of because of poor verbal skills can be very harmful to a child’s self esteem and should be avoided if possible.

Another thing that you can do is to see how their interactions with other children go. If it goes well and they play well with others, then they will more than likely have a smooth transition into starting school. If they are the type to stand apart from others and not have much interaction, then you should work on this with them. You can do this by having play dates and doing other things with them that will get them involved with other children. This is an important step.
