What Is Genealogy?

About Genealogy

Genealogy is a study concerning one’s family lineage and source of ancestry. This is used by individuals who want to learn how and with whom they are connected. Basically, genealogy consists of identifying members of your family and how you are related to each other. This differs from the more general approaches of studying one’s family history. Therefore, it is a more focused and separate type of study relating to one’s lineage.

History of Genealogy

Genealogy has often been regarded as an important field of study especially during times of noble families. The idea of inheritance and passing down leadership was critical to the development and ruling of kingdoms during earlier times. The rule during that time was that if a king had to pass on the crown and he had no direct heir that would inherit the throne, then it would be the next possible heir.

Therefore, it required reliable facts that would serve as proof that one is part of the family’s lineage in order to determine that they are worthy to inherit the throne. The effort to produce more accurate genealogical records was further enhanced by the fact that several tried to claim inheritance.

In today’s times, genealogy still remains an important field of study. There are several circumstances during an individual’s lifetime that may separate him or her from family members. Tracing family records enables one to identify members of the family. This was also evident during WWII wherein people were separated from their families. Genealogy was the only solution that allowed them to reconnect with their lost families.
