The teacher called today to tell you that your child doesn’t want to read during class.  Your child comes home and hates to read.  You make him read because he needs it.  You make him spend hours in his room doing something he doesn’t want to do.  You give him books for children that should be at his level and you know they are educational.  What’s the problem?  The fact is that when children are forced to read, they begin to hate to read, one of the worst things that you can do to a child.  If you make reading a chore, consider what this will do to your child in the long term.

There is no doubt that your child needs to read.  Reading encourages learning, encourages problem solving skills, the ability to make decisions and teaches countless life lessons that you could never teach on your own.  But, the approach to reading is just as important as the how reading is done with the child.  No matter what age your child is at, he can learn to love to read.

First, make sure he is reading at his level, not at the level you think he should be at.  His teacher can help with this.  Once you know he’s not being told to read books that are too difficult, have him read a few books out loud to you.  This insures that he completely understands the topics.  Next, you should make reading rewarding.  Read with your child.  Encourage rewards if your child finishes his or her book.  Learn to encourage reading but not to force it.  Let him pick out the types of books that he’s interested in.

When you make sure that reading is not a chore but a love for your child, books for children will be a gateway into a life full of benefits.  Giving your child the ability to enjoy reading, without feeling like he has to; will make sure that he’s successful.
