1. A Brief Overview of Autism

Anyone who has an autistic child needs to know the basic facts about autism. No one really knows what causes it, but this condition is best described as a clinical condition stemming from a disorder in the development of the brain. When severe it destroys any chance the child has of leading a normal life. However, there are many instances where it is only mild and the person affected can live alone and even have normal relationships.

Autism causes abnormal, recurring and restrictive behavior, oftentimes affecting the overall societal communication and social development of the autistic individual. The communication and interaction problems of the affected person prevent him from becoming part of society.

The term ‘autism’ was originally coined by Hans Asperger. He was running a research on the signs, symptoms or causes of Asperger Syndrome. There are different kinds of causes behind autism rather than any single reason. However, most researchers claim that this problem is inherited. The prime reasons are unclear, though. Researchers are unsure about which cluster of genes is exactly responsible for causing autism.

In exceptional cases experts claim that autism may have occurred due to birth defects. A special school of research claims that some vaccinations might bring on autism, but that is a pretty controversial statement since the school hasn’t produced substantial proof to back the claim.

The initial symptoms relating to autism might be displayed by an infant when he or she is as young as 6 months. As a matter of fact, all the behavioral patterns relating to autism tend to set in by the time the infant is 3 years old. Such early signs and symptoms tend to be very unique and can simply be distinguished from the ones of the milder autistic classes like the Asperger syndrome. If the condition is diagnosed early, these autism symptoms might come well under control with proper treatment and therapy.

However there isn’t cure as of yet for this condition. There are severe symptoms of autism and they might make it utterly impossible for an adult sufferer to live independently, although there are people who are managing effectively any kind of mild forms of autistic disorders. There are also people who regard autism as a mere condition instead of an actual disorder that can be treated.
